Well my team runs the 4-3 base, but we do use a 3 man front sometimes (3-3-5, 3-1-7, etc), and seem to get a few sacks from it. Some examples...

I would assume not, as the 3-4 to be run effectively essentially has OLBs blitzing and DE's stopping the run. Too many players build pass rushing D-ends and run stopping or coverage linebackers. If you dont have the right player builds, the 3-4 isnt very effective.

Is there a penalty for playing DTs at DE in a 3-4?

Not too much from what I've seen, but good grief don't play your DE's as LB's they areway too slow to catch the pitch out run. or to get to the QB to do anything useful.

Maybe your DEs are too slow.

I think during a scrimmage game I'd like to try putting our fast DEs at OLB.
