Just a humble opinion of how the playoffs are shaping up seeding-wise in the East as we get closer and closer to that part of the season. Figured I'd try and stir the pot to get some conversation going about it. Teams will be listed by current seed as of today (8/25).
.) New Brunswick Scarlet Knights: No one has really done much to challenge these guys so far this season, and the real scary thing about this team is that I believe a lot of them have still yet to boost. Once again the class of the East and a virtual lock for the top seed unless the unthinkable happens and they lose half of their remaining games (and NH wins out). Not going to happen. The only question: will the "week" 16 matchup of success vs. levels live up to the preseason hype of GwennA's games to watch for???
.) New Hampshire Hustlers: The entire Hustlers team toasted beers last night to Salem after the Cyber Hawks defeated the Makos. With favorable "week" 14 and 16 matchups still left on the schedule, the Hustlers now look to win at least one of their two difficult games remaining (Vice City and Salem) in order to lock down the second seed.
.) Salem Cyber Hawks: Huge win last night over Miami has surprised a lot of people and way go a little way towards making up for last season's late collapse. However, the Cyber Hawks still have games against Detroit, Atlanta, and New Hampshire left to go so their is no guaranteeing where these guys end up. In any case, they definitely did their part last night in cluttering up the Eastern playoff picture once again.
.) Miami Makos: A tough loss last night combined with a formidable three game stretch before "week" 16 can't be too comforting for the Makos. Despite this, I feel confident that they will get back to the drawing board and establish themselves as the dominant team behind NBSK that they were last season. My pick to finish with the #3 seed, one of those "we wouldn't have to face NBSK until the conference championship" spots.
.) Detroit Outlaws: The good news is that they control their own destiny and if they win out they will end up with the #3 seed in the East. The bad news is their remaing schedule. Three potential playoff teams in their own conference followed by their regular season finale against the up and coming USMC. Can they do it? I think they have the capability to but the results remain to be seen
.) Vice City Mambas: Ouch. Their schedule is just so brutal I don't even know where to begin. They looked great halfway through the seaosn at 7-1 but end with three of their final four against New Hampshire, NBSK, and DVD. Nobody in their right mind would want to have those three on the schedule as they attempt to make a playoff push. Could possibly be the last team out after starting off so strong.
.) Gulf State Demons: Another team that controls their own destiny but with a difficult road ahead. Still face the Makos and Detroit but also have two very winnable games as well. I think they still get in going .500 down the stretch but a win against either Miami or Detroit (or both!) not only turns some heads, but also sends the East seedings into chaos.
.) Miami Hammerheads: A two game lead seems comfortable (with the tiebreaker) over Atlanta but along with two favorable matchups still to go the Hammerheads draw NBSK and then have the daunting task of facing the red-hot Anchorage Wolves in their finale. Another team that gets in by going .500 down the stretch, but Gulf State holds the tiebreaker with them. Oh the possibilities!
.) Atlanta Wolves: A lot of ground to make up with two heartbreaks (or at least one) the past two games and a terribly rough finish to the season. Ending with Salem, the Makos, and then a pissed off Caprica team in the finale just does not bode well for them. A .500 season would be quite the accomplishment IMO, but either way quite the far cry away from the preseason guarantee of 13-3.
.) Scranton Wilkes Barre Menzingers: Watch Out. the most favorable schedule out of anyone in the east to end the season may have Scranton riding a four game winning streak into the playoffs and stealing the eight seed away from someone, Vice City for instance. 9-7 makes that week 2 win over Vice City SO crucial should the standings play out the way I expect them to. I say the Menzingers draw NBSK in round one but really don't mind after they rally to make the playoffs.
The Final six teams in the East have been eliminated from playoff contention but look to make waves in Season Five. No offense to those not included, we look forward to another increase in competition from all six of you next season.
