Yeah, I know, Week 7 will be done in a matter of hours, but I typed this up yesterday, but had no internet access as I was traveling last night and in meetings most of the day today. Anyway here is what I wrote yesterday before hitting the road:
Well 6 weeks in game have passed, so the much hyped return of the BBB#7 power rankings is here. Call me cocky, overconfident, what ever you like, but I didn’t think there was any way I would be typing up rankings for BBB#7 this season, hell I figured based on the way the Nation played last season we would be promoted directly to the Pros.
Anyway, the rankings are based on the same formula as last season. There are 4 main components, that are then adjusted by my random modifiers, hell I really don’t know why you read these, they have so little base in reality (maybe I’m just trying to explain why the Nation is so low right now).
Anyway the components are as follows:
OPOA – Offensive Points Over Average, how many points have you scored against your competition vs. the average they allow.
DPUA – Defensive Points Under Average, how does you points allowed each game compare to the average scored by your opponent.
SOS – Strength of Schedule, are you playing tough competition, or have you build your record on the gutted ruins littering the bottom of the rankings.
WB – Did you beat a top team, then you get bonus points, did you beat one of the ND’s of BBB#7, then you get nothing.
There, all the rambling is out of the way. It’s the 1st week, so there is allot of explaining to do on some of these, I trust the rankings will sort themselves out eventually, since I am too lazy to come up with a new ranking system.
The Top of the Heap
#1 – Texas Tarheels (5-1, rank 35.20)
Well lets just start the mess that is the current rankings off with a shocker. Not that these guys are highly ranked, as they have been playing great ball, but that a once beaten team is at the top of the charts. An outstanding DPUA, the best WB, and being tied for the toughest SOS in the top 10 gets the Tarheels the top spot. This week they host the Oakland Nation. Yeah, its your game of the week.
#2 –Louisville Baby Kittens (5-1, rank 33.03)
And the surprises just keep coming. Despite getting mauled by the Penguins last week, the Baby Kittens find themselves at the top of the charts. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise though. The Kittens are at the top of the charts in both OPOA, DPUA, and have very good SOS and WB numbers. A tough River City squad (who most likely will feel slighted when they find their ranking) is up next.
#3 – Red Bank Thundercats (5-1, rank 31.12)
The Thundercats continue the trend of once defeated teams holding spots above the undefeated. The WB # is the big factor here propelling the Thundercats above the likes of the Purple Penguins. Strong OPOA & DPUA numbers also help. Next up is the Samurai from Syracuse (which makes as much sense as Tom Cruz as the Last Samurai, but I digress).
#4 – Atlanta Purple Penguins (6-0, rank 28.34)
What do you know; an undefeated team can make the top 5 in these fucked up rankings. APP knocked off the powerful Baby Kittens last week, bringing their DPUA to #2 in the league. The win bonus number is definitely hurting the Penguins in the Rankings, fortunately a win over Sin City will help their cause.
#5 – Anchorage Vikings (5-1, rank 28.23)
Just so you didn’t think that teams being ranked above those that defeated them was exclusive to the East, Anchorage does the same in the West. Solid across the board, there is no real ranking factor that sticks out, but then the Vikings have gained a reputation in these rankings as a solid team, that doesn’t always get the respect they deserve. Beating up on Santa Cruz this week won’t help them gain that much desired respect.
2nd tier
#6 – Saginaw Spirit (3-3, rank 23.25)
Riding their outstanding defense to a surprising ranking.
#7 – Oakland Nation (6-0, rank 20.93)
Five straight games vs. winless teams doesn’t prove anything.
#8 – Lincoln Freedom Warriors (4-2, rank 20.02)
Tough defense and tough SOS combine with a good WB to get them to #8.
#9 – Appalachian Lycans (6-0, rank 17.32)
Only scoring 73 (only?!?) against The State of Texas kills their OPOA.
#10 – Chicago Whodat’s (5-1, rank 16.84)
A loss to LA put a damper on what had been building into a nice run.
To early to worry about the rankings
#11 – Houston Armageddon (4-2, rank 16.83)
#12 – Syracuse Samurai (3-3, rank 16.03)
#13 – LA Chupacabras (5-1, rank 15.52)
#14 – Austin Breakers (5-1, rank 13.35)
#15 – DLF Gods (2-4, rank 8.53)
Now it gets even crazier
#16 – Big Whiskey Assassins (0-6, rank 7.51)
#17 – Malibu Mels (4-2, rank 6.61)
#18 – Big Money Dynasty (0-6, rank 5.23)
#19 – The River City Ransom (4-2, rank 3.80)
#20 – Texas Two Step (5-1, rank 3.54)
No, it doesn’t make sense to me either
#21 – Jax Beach Juggernauts (3-3, rank 2.84)
#22 – Cleveland Buckeyes (0-6, rank 2.84)
#23 – Visalia Paraplegics (1-5, rank 1.85)
#24 - Santa Cruz Slashers (0-6, rank 0.60)
#25 - Sin City Showboats (4-2, rank –3.33)
Well now it looks good… until you get to 29
#26 - Phoenix Scorpions (0-6, rank –3.77)
#27 – Roswell Invaders (1-5, rank –5.60)
#28 – Baltimore Hustle (0-6, rank –5.92)
#29 – Fresno Anarchs (5-1, rank –7.50)*
#30 – Richmond Empire (0-6, rank –9.22)
Well I think we have these two right
#31 – Amish Farmers (0-6, rank –32.68)
#32 – The State of Texas Domination (0-6, rank –33.35)
* OK, this one is so far off that I felt the need to go into the numbers some more. Fresno has been quite the surprise, compiling a 5-1 record after spending much of last season at the bottom of our rankings. There are two main reasons for their current position.
1 – Their OPOA and DPUA numbers are abysmal. They have positive results here only twice, holding Big Whiskey 0.83 under their average offensive output, and scoring 2.83 points over the Tarheels average allowed. They have won their games against the winless teams, but have not been impressive in doing so.
2- Their 1st 5 games came against winless teams, meaning no WB to date. The WB number is a little too strong at this point of the season, but since is gets to where it should be by week 10, I’m not changing it now.

Like I said, we can take to eventually dish it. Works for us.
