THE PEERLESS PURPLE PENGUIN PROGNOSTICATIONS (PPPP): WEEK SIX!!!
Wow! I can’t believe it’s coming up on Week 6 (and Brick’s Power Rankings! YAY!!!)
Another 5-2 week, but we sure learned a lot about some teams. River City can forget about surprising anyone anymore. Louisville continues to dominate as does Atlanta, and Red Bank Rebounds Resoundingly! Key victories by Jax Beach and Houson and the usual results in some mismatches round out the week.
One quick apology….as I was preparing this week’s PPPP, I noticed that I made numerous errors with regard to Home/Away last week. Not that it makes much practical difference since GLB doesn’t recognize home field advantage yet, but just wanted to set the record straight. The management apologizes for the errors and will take appropriate disciplinary action against those responsible.
Season Results: 34-4
Week Four Results: 5-2
Baltimore at Appalachian Prediction: None Actual: APP 70-14
Syracuse at Texas Prediction: SYR 49-0 Actual: SYR 122-0
Roswell at Atlanta Prediction: ATL 34-14 Actual: ATL 94-3
Cleveland at Jax Beach Prediction: CLV 28-13 Actual: JAX 38-10
Richmond at River City Prediction: RVR 38-7 Actual: RVR 64-14
Saginaw at Houston Prediction: HOU 20-14 Actual: HOU 24-14
Lincoln at Red Bank Prediction: LIN 21-17 Actual: RBK 29-0
Louisville at Sin City Prediction: LOU 45-24 Actual: LOU 59-3
This week features some more contests that will shape our views of where the teams shake out in their chase for a playoff berth. It will be interesting, to say the least.
(8) Houston Armageddon (3-2) at Baltimore Hustle(0-5)-----No comment.
(7) The State of Texas Domination (0-5) at Saginaw Spirit (2-3)-----Saginaw comes off a disappointing (but correctly predicted!) loss to the Armageddon last week and get rewarded with a chance to catch their breath and regroup before embarking on a critical stretch of their schedule for the following three weeks against Lincoln, Syracuse and Red Bank. The Spirit desperately need to right the ship before running that gauntlet because losses to those three teams would severely damage their playoff hopes, making the relatively easier end of season schedule a moot exercise. The talent is there in the Spirit locker room. A few breaks and a little confidence may be all they need. The breaks are up to fortune, but Texas should be able to supply the confidence...……..SAGINAW-52 TEXAS-6
(6) Appalachian Lycans (5-0) at Cleveland Buckeyes (0-5)-----Unbelievable schedule that Cleveland has had to contend with! Louisville, Atlanta and Appalachian within the first six weeks, with resurgent River City as well! The Buckeyes have to keep their chins held high---they’ll get their chance to show their stuff soon enough, but against this caliber of competition the heart may be willing but the body is weak. At least weaker than the competition they’ve faced thus far. Appalachian was my preseason choice as the number one team in the conference—I’m afraid it’s just going to be too much for Cleveland ….…..APPALACHIAN-48 CLEVELAND-0
(5) Jax Beach Juggernauts (2-3) at Richmond Empire (0-5)-----We have all marveled at how Richmond is reborn, but Jax Beach has quietly put together two convincing wins in a row. Richmond simply doesn’t have the horses to contend with L25 Stefano C. Sharp, L27 WR tyrone shoes and L24 QB Dick Pepper. Jax Beach’s Achilles heel has been the number of inactives on their roster, but against Richmond it won’t matter. The Juggernauts make it three in a row...………JAX BEACH-28 RICHMOND-13
(4) The River City Ransom (3-2) at Roswell Invaders (1-4)-----River City wants me to overlook them some more. Well, then they’re going to have to stop winning games by 50 points because that kind of performance gets you NOTICED! Roswell is a good team whose weaknesses in the secondary and shallowness at WR played right into the strengths of the Penguins last week. River City, on the other hand, looks to be developing a nicely balanced attack, with 1010.5 yds passing and 908.5 rushing. They’re going to be hard to defend for the Invaders while their depth at DE may make up for only 3 DTs on the roster. The River City Resurgence Resumes!!!...…..RIVER CITY-31 ROSWELL-17
(3) Lincoln Freedom Warriors (3-2) at Syracuse Samurai (3-2)-----Yet ANOTHER game that may have MAJOR playoff implications later on. Both teams are 3-2 and probably a bit disappointed about it. Despite Syracuse’s top flight aerial attack with a L27 QB and a L25 WR, Lincoln can counter with outstanding CB Head Shot and an outstanding LB corps. On the other side of the field, Lincoln continues to aggressively recruit, as well as give the rest of the league updates (thank you very much!) and has put together a very strong OL to protect L25 QB Chris Morrison as he passes to his new L22 WR Defin Mclean as well as old stalwart L22 WR Blitzkrieg Jones. This is especially important for the Freedom Warriors this week as Syracuse’s season-long weakness has been at CB. Whether Lincoln can exploit that weakness is probably the key to the game. It says here…….they’ll fall just a bit short...……..SYRACUSE-28 LINCOLN-21
(2) Red Bank Thundercats (4-1) at Sin City Showboats (4-1)-----Red Bank bounced back from their pasting by Louisville, skunking the Freedom Warriors 29-0. An impressive performance on the heels of the loss 2 weeks ago. After that loss, the Thundercats might have lost their fighting spirit or strengthened their resolve to bounce back from adversity. It’s no surprise that these guys chose the latter. OTOH, Sin City is showing the same pattern as last year where they started off strong, stumbled a few times, then faded badly down the stretch to the point where they were left out of the playoffs. The Showboats four victories came against teams that are a combined 1-19, so the Showboats impressive start was as much an illusion as a Sin City magic trick. Red Bank would like to welcome them to reality---never play three card monte with a Thundercat!.…..….…..RED BANK-35 SIN CITY-10
(1) GAME OF THE WEEK: Atlanta Purple Penguins (5-0) at Louisville Baby Kittens (5-0)-----Three weeks in a row the Baby Kittens have been featured in the Game of the Week, but none of those contests is more important than this week’s throwdown with the Purple Penguins. Both these teams benefited from a fairly weak schedule to start the season, but Louisville has entertained two of the more serious contenders in recent weeks in Red Bank and Sin City and have emerged unscathed. Atlanta remains untested except for an season opening victory against underrated Saginaw. As always in a Louisville game, the question is containing the dynamic duo of Batman (Kamikaze Kitten) and Robin (Kyle Kortnue)—with apologies to the Lycans’ CB boy wonder. It hasn’t happened yet, perhaps in large part due to the presence of Black Lightning—yes there really is a superhero by that name—Jackie R. Robinson in the Baby Kittens backfield. However, only the Lycans defense can really challenge the Purple Penguins for conference supremacy defensively. They have allowed the fewest passing yards/game in the conference and opponents average NEGATIVE rushing yds per contest. The Irresistible Force meets the Immovable Object. When Atlanta has the ball, they have been almost as prolific as the Kittens, although not in as spectacular a fashion. L26 WR/KR Gil Wayne has turned into a touchdown machine, and the Purple Penguins Prowess is demonstrated by its 67.8 ppg average—just 8 pts less than Louisville! Its going to be interesting to see who comes out on top no matter who wins, but seriously, was there any doubt about who I am favoring in this contest?!..……..ATLANTA-28 LOUISVILLE-24
Well, that’s a look at the upcoming games and we should have a clear favorite for the conference crown after this week. Appalachian will have something to say about that, of course, but the only matchups thus far between consensus title contenders have involved Louisville, and if they win this week, they have to be considered the favorites for the Championship.
