About the week 2 predictions not being out. This past Saturday we had a massive lightning storm over my neighborhood. Well as luck would have it we got struck - or at least the 100' Oak tree 5 feet from my house did. I have exploded bark all over everything, my land line is dead and my high speed connection with it, my Direct TV is shot, my fridge, microwave, dishwasher, dryer and washing maching are all zapped, plus my wifes laptop that she left plugged in is dead too. I'm most upset about the Oak though. Besides being an amazing tree in and of itself (I'm a closet tree hugger, sorry), it pretty much covered the back end of my house with shade in the summertime. For those of you living in the south you'll understand how important that is. That tree probably saved me $100 a month from May thru September in cooling costs. Now it's gonna cost me about $2000 to take it down, not to mention everything else I'll have to replace. So, long story short - I have no internet access at the house for a few days until AT&T gets out there for repairs. I'll try to get on at work when I can, but no guarantees on that end.

Again, sorry all.

Ouch - seriously, no need for apologies. That's rough. Good luck getting your life back in order out there.

Yeah, really man. I don't think you need to apologize to any of us for not getting a little extra reading material submitted!

I'm in VA ... probably not as South as you, but I definitely understand the difference trees (and too many or too few) can make.

Might want to take a shot at a Craigslist post before you select a tree service. You'll undoubtedly get some morons, but should get some decent offers as well. With the economy being what it is, I've had several legitimate guys knock on my door since summer started (I have way too many big trees for the standard 1/3 acre lot). Deals can be had sometimes as these guys just aren't getting the work they've had in the past.

The best thing to do might even be if you get lucky and find someone already working nearby. They usually have a few guys who, since they're already on site, wouldn't mind making a few extra bucks for 1 more tree. Granted, it still won't be cheap, but might get down from the $2k you're facing now.

Good luck!

Im not sure how it would work for only 1 tree (though it is a large one) but when we got a few acres cleared in PA the work was done for free. People came in and took down the trees and kept the wood for themselves to sell. Might be an option for you to look into.

I doubt you'll get interest with only one tree but its worth looking into.

I know all about those big Oaks. I have several around the cul de sac I live in that keeps us shaded much of the day. Hate to hear about your misfortune though.

Yeah there are a lot of people that will come out and help take a tree down if you give them wood.

We had a 250 year old oak that caught a disease that had to be taken down on the corner of our lot at home. Sucks that its gone because now the drunks cut across our lawn instead of hitting the tree when they leave the bars.

made me laugh, that is the silver lining! Start putting out ads in the papers asking if anybody wants to come and get some wood from you. Free wood! Call Mr. Johnson at 555-wood. Had to go there....sorry
