my mother died of cancer when i was seven. lung cancer, specifically, from waitressing to keep food on the table. had dad been around, i probably wouldnt have been shuttled from foster home to foster home, nor spent a few years in juvie.

i keep a picture of mom in my wallet, it's an old pic from when she was young and life hadnt destroyed her yet. there was such vitality in her eyes, it's a shame the only actual memory i have of her is with tubes shoved down her windpipe. i suppose i'll agree those last few weeks in the hospital, she might not have been pretty in the classical sense, but she loved us, and she tried. tried too hard, i suppose.
