I think as the season wore on it was pretty clear that there were four top teams from each conference. Teams 5-8 might not agree but….its true. I’m fairly glad there were no upsets because now each game could completely go either way. I’ll be interested to see what everyone else thinks is going to happen
Western Conference
#1 San Diego vs #4 Omaha
Back in week 12 this was the team everyone thought would finally beat San Diego. It was a great, close game and San Diego squeaked by winning 16-13. As the season progressed I felt that this would end up being the Western Conference finals matchup, but with Anchorage and Albuquerque both only losing twice, Omaha got stuck with the 4 seed and these two great teams face off in the quarterfinals. Since week 1 the only team to score more than 16 on Omaha is Anchorage, and San Diego’s offense can normally run with anyone and score just enough to get it done, whether that’s 39 or 16.
Prediction: San Diego 16 Omaha 13
#2 Albuquerque vs #3 Anchorage
Albuquerque was able to shut down Anchorage’s very good offense, sacking AJ Clutch 5 times and holding HB Jon Jones to a 1.3 YPC average. Even though Albuquerque still gained a decent number of yards, Anchorage did bend but they never broke, as Albuquerque only won 16-10. All season we have been waiting for the Anchorage/San Diego showdown in the WCFs. Are we going to get it?
Anchorage 16 Albuquerque 10
Eastern Conference
#1 Akron vs #4 Memphis
Last years Cinderella team Memphis looks to do the impossible and end Akrons perfect season a lot earlier than anyone would expect. Akron handled them fairly easily in their regular season matchup, winning 24-7. I don’t see much changing and I don’t see why anyone else would either
Prediction: Akron 31 Memphis 10
#2 Alpine vs #3 Chicago
These two teams haven’t meet since week one and I’m sure a lot has changed since then regarding boosting and just figuring out gameplans. Back in week 1 I had Chicago as the favorite to beat Alpine and while things may have changed can Alpine beat this great Bruins squad two times in one season? This has the potential to be the best game of the round.
Prediction: Alpine 28 Chicago 27
