Is Shutdown Coverage that important for a FS? It seems like most sets have them playing some kinda cover 2/3 as a backstop for the defense.

I'm trying to evaluate FS builds for recruiting purposes and would like to know if points into Shutdown Coverage are worth it or not.

ofcourse it's worth it. Though right now you should evaluate players more on their physical rather then special abilites at this stage.

^ well...what if two players are identical...but one loaded up on super vision (which seems like a killer zone skill) and one loaded up on Shutdown Coverage (man 2 man).

I guess I'm just asking how often a FS is in man 2 man vs zone? This begs the larger question of in the defensive AI, whether cover 0 (man) vs cover 1/2 would be worth it for the safeties.

When recruiting guys in the high teens low 20's...folks are gonna have SA's, so I asked the question.

FS usually do more zone then man since they usually try to bring the double team on a WR. I would go with the one with supervision but put the other one as the 3rd CB (if you don't have anyone better move him to starting CB) while also playing backup FS.

I'm agent to both our FS and I find that I'm almost always playing zone even if we choose a high man2man setting.

That said, our defense is weaker than most offenses in the league so it makes a lot of sense for the AI to have my FS sit back and try to mop up.

I'm for Super Vision all the way until I see my players start to pick up players before the throw.

I put a point there for the TE and RB

Once I added Super Vision SA's into my FS I noticed him reacting to plays faster and knocking a lot of passes down, and sometimes beating the SS to the spot on run support. Once I put a couple points into Shutdown Coverage I got my first 2 career INTs.

I would say that Shutdown Coverage is a direct result of me getting those INTs.

Just to put it in perspective, I've never put *any* points into Shutdown Coverage, but as soon as I put a few points into Super Vision, that's when the interceptions started coming for me. As well as a noticable increase in PD's as well.

I'm at a 5 in both SA's (shut down and super) and my FS lvl 18 ended up with:
Defense
Season 3..G 16/Tk 66/ MsTk 2/ PD 10 /Int 5/ IntYd 35/ FF 1

Here's my FS

A FEW points in Shutdown never hurts, as it gives a lot of good stuff when used. It's most useful when the sim goes nuts and sends a CB on the blitz; the FS will usually take over covering his WR. My FS also likes to join the CBs and double team WRs, which always forces the QB to look elsewhere. BUT, Super Vision is much more important.. I wouldn't advise more than a couple levels of Shutdown.

The key here is understanding what qualifies as man coverage. It would be nice to know the definition, you know? My squad has a pretty good defense, so we heavily emphasize playing man coverage. But it's supposed to be cover 2, right? We always match up CB for WR, unless they put out 5 WR. But the FS is frequently responsible for the TE or double teaming a WR. But either way, they're not playing close at the line. Does it count as man coverage (for this ability) when you're in a double team or when you're playing a soft man against a TE? This also important to figuring out how much better the FS may be than the SS at pass coverage.

ideally u want points in both SA trees. closing speed (hard hitter) is great for your FS because it helps cover the field, but i think that the coverage tree is more important. first step, change of direction, and superior vision are huge helps and u notice a FS reacting faster than somebody without it. another thing about high vision and superior vision is that if you use that player on special teams you'll notice that the player finds the openings in the blocking scheme pretty often and gets in there to make the play.

On a related note to this, as a safety in general, what coverage tree do you think is more valuable to defending the pass whether against a WR or a TE, FS with First Step and Shutdown Coverage or SS with Sticky Hands and Closing Speed? I realize FS has Closing Speed as well, but it is in the hard hitter tree and will take more to raise up if I focus on coverage abilities when I put points into Special Abilities.

IMO, the SS is better just cuz Super Vision is 2nd tier instead of the 4th tier like in the FS tree. Sticky Hands and Closing speed > First Step and Shutdown Coverage though too.
