Season 3 Playoff Matchups
(8) Kansas Warriors (8-8) @ (1) Kalamazoo Coyotes (14-2)
For the second year in a row, the Coyotes earns the #1 spot in the East and get to face off with the Kansas Warriors. The Warriors missed out on the playoffs last season and started off the season with a dismal 1-6 record. However, the Kansas-based squad never gave up and finished the regular season on a 5 game win streak that allowed them to sneak into the playoffs. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they have to face off with Ray Finkle and the rest of the Coyotes. During their regular season game, the Coyotes won 26-10 and looked dominant except for a TD pass thrown by Kansas QB Air Ball with 11 seconds left in the game. Kalamazoo QB Ron Dash had a very efficient 1 TD, 0 INT game and HB Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for 139.5 yards with an average of 4.8 YPC. Kansas leaned towards the passing game in their first meeting, giving their starting HB, Barry Blaststrong, only 12 carries. QB Air Ball threw the ball 55 times for 281 yards and had 1 TD and 1 INT but was hurried 12 times and sacked twice. Expect the Coyotes to have a repeat performance of their regular season dominance in this 1-8 matchup.

(7) Washington Bullets (10-6) @ (2) Philadelphia Pushovers (14-2)
Like the Coyotes, the Pushovers earned the same playoff spot they had in season 2 but the Bullets dropped 2 spots since DDL and DC Warpath pushed themselves into the top of the East. These two teams faced off in the first game of the regular season and the Pushovers dominated 25-3 with the only TD of the game being scored by Philly FB Jim Taylor. Gold Toe Sock kicked in the rest of the points for Philly, going 6/6 in FGA. As expected, Philly dominated Washington’s rushing attack but allowed for 212 passing yards, including 11 receptions for 117 yards by WR Jason Boos. Philly QB Julian Krist and HB Keith Goddard had solid, but unspectacular, games. The Philly defense however, was spectacular, sacking Scott Boonell 3 times and hurrying him 12 times. In his defense, Boonell handled the pressure well and didn’t throw any interceptions but failed to lead his team into the endzone. Much like the 1-8 matchup, the Pushovers are heavily favored in this game.

(6) D.C. Warpath (12-4) @ (3) Detroit Demon Lions (13-3)
In a bizarre twist of fate, the two USA Pro newcomers end up squaring off with each other in this first round matchup. This is also the only 1st round game where the lower ranked team prevailed in the regular season game. The Warpath managed to hand DDL their second loss of the season behind 322.5 yards and a 70.2% completion rating from DC QB Slingin Sammy Baugh. Baugh also had 2 TD’s but was picked off twice. DDL also went with a pass-heavy attack but QB Paul Blake only completed 39.1% of his passes and ended with 1 TD and 3 INT’s. Both QB’s were heavily pressured by the defensive lines of both teams, combining for 20 hurries and 7 sacks. DE’s Ken Cote (DDL) and Charles Mann (DC) each had 3 sacks. Curiously enough, DDL opted to give K Golden Foot kicking and punting duties, allowing for much better field position for DC (36.2 yards/punt for Zeid Ugh (DC) compared to 20.9 yards/punt for DDL’s Golden Foot). Many people expected DDL to dominate this game and DDL coach TSE was quick to blame boosting for the loss, even going as far to claim “WE (DDL) WON that day…” In fact, this rivalry has been building so much recently that DC owner Hogglife challenged TSE to a $100 bet based on this game’s outcome. After TSE declined, DDL player OOGA BOOGA accepted the hundo challenge and, after some verbal abuse at the hands of Hogglife, TSE also accepted the bet. Along with the $200, a season-long avatar bet rides on this game. This writer expects an all out war between these two teams who have more than just pride on the line. Was DC’s earlier victory solely due to a few early boosts or has the loud-mouthed Hogglife found the weakness in the former AAA#2 champ’s gameplan?

(5) Chiago Mustangs (12-4) @ (4) Detroit Nasty (13-3)
The fans in Detroit must be going insane because not only will they be lucky enough to watch the DDL-DC game, they will also get to enjoy the other major rivalry in the Eastern Conference, the Nasty and the Mustangs. In their week 15 meeting, the Nasty surprised everyone with a dominating 29-3 win over Chicago. On offense, Detroit spread the wealth, getting a rush TD courtesy of HB Julius Brown and a passing TD when the Varsity Blues-inspired players QB Johnny Moxon and WR Charlie Tweeder hooked up for a 17 yard TD. Nasty K Jacob Lang knocked in 5 FG’s to round out Detroit’s scoring. Surprisingly Chicago’s usually dominant defensive line only managed 4 hurries and 0 sacks. Chicago’s offense also stalled with HB Greg Alstott managing only 29.5 yards on 18 rushes (1.6 YPC) and QB Andrew Vick throwing for 0 TD’s and 2 INT’s. With the stats so skewed, it may seem like Detroit has a huge advantage but for those who know USA Pro know that is not completely true. The Mustangs have a San Antonio Spurs-esque ability to turn on their game in the playoffs (7-1 playoff record in season 1 and 2). Tim Harper has made it known that the regular season means little to his squad and his only goal is to win it all. Both these teams have experienced championship glory in the past (Detroit in Alpha, Chicago in season 1) and both are eager to add another trophy to their case.
