So I'm trying to build a receiver who's designed to fit on a run-oriented team.
I'd like him to be able to act as a good possession type receiver with good blocking skills. Here's where he is at lvl 11:

Strength: 10.43 Blocking: 8.96
Speed: 36.31 Tackling: 9
Agility: 28.31 Throwing: 8
Jumping: 22.04 Catching: 36.31
Stamina: 27.31 Carrying: 18.62
Vision: 22.62 Kicking: 9
Confidence: 15 Punting: 10

Possession
4-1-1-1-1
Speed:
2-1-0-0-0

I'm currently training carrying to at least 20. Then I'd like to start training blocking and strength. I don't think it will take much to consistently block a CB, but I'm still undecided on how much strength I want to put into it as opposed to blocking. Strength might break a couple tackles, but I really don't want to invest so much into his run-blocking that he gets shut down all day when going out for the pass.

What you you guys think?

It looks like a solid possession build, but if you hadn't told us it was to be a blocking WR too, I would not have known. I think you need to sacrifice somewhere along the line to get blocking up to 15-20, even if it's just by training. Strength, like you said, will probably be more useful to you. 25 would probably suffice in strength as a minimum. That said, my level 23 CB is usually a force in the running game and his strength is very low; either WRs are REALLY ignoring strength, so his low strength doesn't hurt him in shedding blocks or his spd/agi just lets him run around those blocks.

I'm curious about that too. I think that if I got strength and blocking up past 20, and still had my agility and speed high enough that it might negate a CBs, I think he might block well consistently.

As far as where he is currently, I haven't begun to train blocking or strength.

Strength will naturally help w/ blocking so I suggest working on strength first since it helps with receiving as well and work on blocking later.

A rule of thumb is strength has more impact on run blocking (attacking the defender aggressively) and less impact on pass blocking (standing your ground and reacting to the defender) while blocking has less impact on run blocking and more impact on pass blocking. Both are still very important to both kinds of blocking though. That being said strength is the way to go to start since it will improve your run blocking the most, increase your ability to break tackles, and often create a blocking mismatch since MANY corners have low strength and so can be pancaked easily.

Agility also helps in blocking agile defenders and odds are a number of CBs you encounter are going to have decent agility. Between that and the fact that next season agility is going to become more important I wouldn't neglect it. Catching is fine for a while at 36 on a level 11.

If you are going to pick one area to maybe take a hit while you work on strength I suggest special abilities, you can always catch up on them quickly once your key skills start to cost 2 points. You could try taking a hit to vision, but I am a big believer in its ability to help most positions in multiple ways.

A good idea would be to look at some pass catching or combination catching/blocking TE's if you can find stats for them and make a similar build. Not identical, mind you, you still probably want to be a little bit better receiver and a little worse blocker since you won't be taking on DEs or LBs as much as the TE would.

I have my strength over 20, and my blockings at about 15 and I make alot of my blocks.. so just get those up to around there and you'll be good.

You don't need a lot of blocking as a WR since you're primarily blocking DB's. Get strength to about 20-25 and you should be fine. Maybe train blocking to about 15ish.

My WR has 15 strength and 12 blocking (both via training) and continually pancakes CBs. I would say 15-20 str is plenty for a WR.

Sorry for bumping so many old blocking WR threads to the top all at once, but I've been monitoring them and couldn't contribute at the time. I can now.

See:

Popes' Guide To Blocking WR:

Specifically:

"CONCLUSION 2. Blocking is more important than Strength for blocking WRs. In fact, too much Strength (pancakes) is often detrimental to the running game."
