Well, there has been much discussion last season how this should be handled, but it seems that discussion faded away with the season. So maybe it is time to revive the dead horse and try to figure out how AllStar voting should be handled this season to be as fair as possible. So here is the thread to discuss how we should handdle it, and hopefully we can come to a conclusion before the end of the season.

And here is my personal proposal:
Each team can send in a ballot with up to 3 nominations per position, naturally they can't pick players from their own team. Positions that have more starters (G, OT, DT, DE, OLB, CB, WR) will get 5 nomination slots. The players will receive points based on their nomination slot, so the #1 will get 5 points, #2 will get 3, #3 will get 1 (or 9-7-5-3-1 respectively). Teh final ranking is based on the number of points a player received, in case of a tie the number of #1 votes is the tie breaker.
To account for as many teams ballots as possible I propose the following:
Each team only has one ballot, but everyone can send in a ballot, clearly stating which team it is for. If the owner sends in a ballot that is the one that counts for that team. If there is no owner ballot by the deadline the first GM ballot received for that team will count. If there is neither an owner or GM ballot by the deadline the first player ballot received will count. It will be clearly communicated by those who do the counting which ballots they already have received, to avoid uneccesary spam of ballots that won't count anyway.
So what is everyones opinion on this?

I like it, uses the best parts of last season's picks and should increase participation.

will there be separation between alpha and zeta all-star teams (ie, can you nominate 3 for alpha and a different three for zeta)? i think bort should have an all-star or pro bowl game to run the top squads against each other in the off-season.

i think it will be like last season. Zeta Owners only vote for Zeta and Alpha only vote for Alpha

I like the idea and think it would make it easier if Zeta Owners only vote for Zeta players and Alpha only vote for Alpha players
I like it and think that as long as we have one method we will be ok.
But I think teams should also be able to nominate from their own team...
1 from QB WR RB.
1 from OT OG OC
1 from TE FB K P
1 from DT DE
1 from LB
1 from CB FS SS
1 other of their choice.
This is only to avoid teams who vote being penalised, as happened last season, the lack of full participation meant players on teams who didnt vote had a unfair advantage.
Also gives a selfish reason to submit the ballot

I think/hope participation will be better as we open it up to more than team owners. Maybe even allow two ballots per team along the lines I described above?
As for nominating players from your own team, I am not sure I'd break it down by position. How about up to 5 players on the ballot can come from your own team, but no more than two at any given position when it is a 5 player position, not more than one if it is a three player position?

Dunno about two ballots per team because that could cause problems...some teams could send two and the others perhaps one so that would be unfair.

This was my first thought.
But I think you might get more responses if you said you can nominate your own player ONLY if you nominate two other players in that position?
Again it will encourage more participation.
We are asking for people to look in detail at 24 positions for this ballot.
No matter what we do thats going to be very tough.
O-Line for example is going to be impossible to vote for individually.
Pancakes are the only tracked stat, while Sacks and hurries allowed are only tracked by team.
So its almost certain that the OLine will include the top pancakers and maybe a few players from the unit that gave up the least sacks and hurries.
Again this might be fair?

Who says AllStar ballots need to be fair?
Sure there will be deserving players that will be overlooked, but if we get some 20 teams or so to submit a ballot with weighted nominations I think the numbers will even out and we will have some players win that deserve it for the most part.

I guess I'm just a pessimist...
I think it will be a success if we get 8 teams per Conference to submit a first choice second choice ballot, with the other 8 giving first choice and their own 5 names.

I see no problem with voting for 3/5 per position, but only 1 (max) per position from your own team.
