When ownership was handed over just two games ago, the Mukesh Zebras had just one man in mind at halfback. Since then, DeVogel has rushed for a total of 73 yards and 1 touchdown. Those aren't the numbers new GM's like to see out of their starters.
However, the Zebras did manage to come away with a win in both contests, but now the loyal Zebra fans are screaming for backup Mike Castro. And when the fans start screaming, the new owners at 1RF, Inc. are going to listen.
In the latest contest, a 26-13 win over Alberta Power, Castro accounted for touchdowns on 52 yards in 15 attempts. DeVogel was also given fifteen carries, and punched the ball in just 1 time with a 43 yard effort.
Coach Meryk had this to say in the latest media teleconference, "The new owners made a suggestion to get Castro more involved, and I'm glad that I did. But that doesn't mean Nick is out of a starting job."
The controversy at the Zoo continues to build as the Zebras prepare to take their song and dance show on the road this weekend, taking on the Red Deer Supreme.
The Mukesh Tribune was able to catch up with both DeVogel and Castro after their practice this afternoon.
"I wouldn't be the least bit ashamed to lose my job to Castro," said a humble DeVogel. "But the backup is always the most well-liked guy on the team according to the fans."
Castro responded, "Listen. I'm the new guy around here. I'm not going to say I should or should not be starting. As far as I am concerned, we can continue taking equal carries. But at some point, a decision has to be made, and I will accept either role Coach Meryk decides to put me in.
DeVogel also had 9 yards receiving in the contest against Alberta, and 12 yards receiving against Chilliwack. Castro is still holding up a goose egg in the receiving category.
So who is #1 for the Zebras? That'll be up to Coach Meryk to decide.
