I'm just now starting to realize how linear DE's pass rushing abilities are.
First Step->Change Direction->Shed Block->Tunnel Vision->Big Sack
Think about it. All 5 of them happen simultaneously on every play.
When the play starts, you have to get off the snap fast. This is what I like to call the "Vernon Gholston Affect". If you've ever watched tape of Vernon, he's usually 2-4 yards further into the backfield than the rest of his line after a couple seconds into the play. This is because he has such a great initial burst, or, in GLB lingo, first step.
Then, when he is engaged with his blocker, he has to get around the blocker. Change Direction.
Once he gets around his blocker, he has to disengage. Shed Block.
Then, he has to get to the QB as quickly as he can to prevent the QB from making a pass or scrambling. Tunnel Vision.
Once he gets to the QB, he has to inflict as much pain as possible so the QB starts making errant throws and gets scared of the him. Big Sack.
It's so linear, it's brilliant. My hat goes off to Bort.
