I was hoping it wouldn't come to this.
Today, your president launched what can only be described as economic war on our country, Canada. The pretense for this is patently ridiculous. Less than 1 percent of fentanyl enters the United States through Canada. Less still, when it comes to illegal immigrants. As for the so-called trade deficit, you should be aware that, yes, Canada sells more to the US than we import, but those sales are largely made up of significantly discounted oil that you, in turn, refine in the US and re-export. Remove Canadian oil, and you actually have a trade surplus with Canada. So your president's arguments are complete rubbish.
As if that weren't enough, your president has repeatedly disrespected our sovereignty, suggesting we meekly accept becoming the 51st state.
This is all falling rather flat here, north of our shared border. We stood behind you after 9-11. We stood and died beside you in two world wars, later in Korea, Desert Storm, and Afghanistan.
We signed a new trade agreement which your president hailed as the greatest trade agreement in history, only a few short years ago, only to see him abrogate that agreement. Which raises the question - what is the United States' word worth?
We did not choose this trade war, but I know I speak for a lot of Canadians when I say we are determined to fight back. This is completely needless, but you cannot expect us to roll over. Hopefully, saner heads prevail in your country, which I love, but truly despair for.
