Hello all, I am returning after some years. I have 17k flex and want to create a new player for some team that is willing to help with build advice.

Day 40 is when the ideal player creation period will begin (in 20 days)
I would suggest creating some players now using your Free Player slots and signing them to a CPU team until day 40, and then retiring them and start new players during the optimal time period.
You can use the rest of this season to search for a rookie team that will be starting up next season, and just getting into the hang of training/SP processes in the meantime.
