I have been away from this game for quite some time. Am i doing something wrong or is the only thing that you can set for tactics the focus on offense and the same for defense? ie...run focus, balanced, man to man...

It sounds like you're simplifying it a little too much. You can't get as advanced as the regular leagues, but there are enough ins and outs to keep it fun IMO. It's kept me entertained since about season 8, but that's probably not saying a lot.

You can use the presets and corresponding depth charts (cpu)

Or you can use individual settings %ages ...formations....areas...etc...You can set your own d/c if you do this but will prob need to go into other tabs such as tactics formations ...If you have a diverse roster this can be difficult to get right or even nearly right

Does the tagging work for the defensive presets though? I tried all of them with the tags and honestly I could never tell the difference... the defensive AI in casual just seemed to do whatever it wanted when i was the coordinator

I would like to know also, just in case I'm ever in that position again. The regular non-casual makes much more sense to me

I don't mind the over simplified tactics, however, my last scrimmage the opponent set up in a pro RT formation and my defense overloaded the weak side leaving us 3 men short on the strong side. As you can guess it resulted in a long TD run. Their WR just down blocked the CB and there was nothing there. Heck, both of my Safeties lined up on the weak side.

On another pass play, the offense lined up in doubles and it appeared as if I was in man. However, on the snap of the ball, my inside CB seemed to play cover 1 leaving the slot wide open for another long TD.

That is completely frustrating.

Rookie ball in any league can be frustrating. As far as casual, there are presets that were made for the regular leagues that can be used in Casual

Presets available in Casual for offense:

Balanced
Big
Outside
Pass First
Power
Run First
Spread
West Coast
Wildcat

Description of each is listed here : https://glb.warriorgeneral.com/game/faq.pl?cat=Team%20Ownership#270

With these, you can use the custom depth chart spots to get the proper personnel you want in the game for certain plays. Depth chart breakdown can be found here: https://glb.warriorgeneral.com/game/faq.pl?cat=Team%20Ownership#272

The only preset that works with the tagging is the "tagged" defensive preset.

Ty for that sunder B. I knew that already. My ire is the ridiculous defensive schemes that I have witnessed so far. If my defense misaligns, I have no chance.

Casual defense is definitely tricky. And what works at the early ages will not work at plateau and vice versa.

See if you can find the private forum titled : "THE Casual Forum"

The forum itself is completely dead, but there are some old threads in there still with good information on casual defense. If it isn't visible publicly to add yourself, send a private message to https://glb.warriorgeneral.com/game/home.pl?user_id=287167

She created the forum and can add people if it is private.

Tagging works here and there if you tag correctly, but it's finicky and is good for a bit before it starts doing nothing, then it starts working, just to crap out again.

ugh. There is no tactic that should make that happen. Are the safeties hiding? It just doesn't make sense why stuff like that is even in the game. I hope you figure out the tactics, and at the very least keep stuff from that happening. If it wasn't for stuff like that I'd play more casual.

Don't know if this helps anyone but I found that making 1 play 'package' and one DAI regular leagues helped me see the things you can't se in the Casual settings. The play design and what exactly the player (on defense) does when making a setting. Example; Setting your safety into a medium strong zone rather than a deep zone. Where does that shift his area of focus? How does it move him on the field? When you 'shift the D-line', where does everyone move to? How does it effect the LB's? Does it change who the head-to-head offensive player is across from your defender? All of that changes things and creates those mismatches that can be good... or bad for you. I'm damn sure no expert but it did make my (casual) defenses better knowing those things.

This is rookie where the lack of anything is quite evident. Why both safeties were right on top of the RILB is beyond me. Only thing I can think of is one was a spy and the other was blitzing. Hence the FS immediately rushing the line and the SS following the QB.
