It's not "coronavirus." It's COVID-19.
Coronavirus is an entire, huge category of viruses that includes many forms of the common cold, in addition to more severe and mutated strains such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. COVID-19 is the particular strain of mutated coronavirus that began in Wuhan, China and is now spreading worldwide.
Saying "coronavirus" when you mean "COVID-19" is like saying "pizza" when you mean "pineapple-and-anchovy pizza," or like saying "car" when you mean "red 2020 Ford Taurus," or like saying "cat" when you mean "tiger." A tiger is a type of cat, but most cats are not tigers. A tiger is a hell of a lot more dangerous than a cat, so calling a tiger a "cat" when it's on the loose in a city is dangerously vague.
Sorry, this has been bugging me for the past month. But people widely calling it "coronavirus" is what leads to idiots googling "coronavirus" and then saying shit on Facebook like "CORONAVIRUS IS JUST THE COMMON COLD, PEOPLE!!! THEY'RE LYING TO YOU TO GET YOU TO PANIC SO THEY CAN CONTROL YOU!!!1!" And then some other idiot reads that and believes it, ignores their symptoms when they develop a mild case of COVID-19, and passes it on to 20 other people -- including, hypothetically, someone with asthma, or someone fighting off lung cancer, or an 80-year-old grandmother.
Please, everyone... it's called COVID-19. Don't let misinformation literally kill people.

So Novus, I get what you're saying, but it is also technically called "Coronavirus".

So COVID-19 is *a* coronavirus. So are many other things. The issue with the WHO's statement is grammatical; they shouldn't have used parenthesis. It should have just been "Coronavirus disease COVID-19...." just like saying "Football player Tom Brady..."
So talking about having "coronavirus" would be like referring to every football player as "Football Player"
It is technically accurate but isn't specific and loses a lot of the meaning because people *think* that it is supposed to be referencing just this one example of the virus, leading to potentially misleading info like Novus pointed out.

I'm not arguing what you or Novus is saying at all. I actually agree, but literally everyone including the World Health Org calls it coronavirus. I'm going to guess they are way more educated than we are on the subject.

I guess I should clarify, I'm not mad at Dergillz in particular for saying "coronavirus." PLENTY of people are doing that right now... including people at the World Health Organization who are caught between giving technically correct information versus giving information that people will understand. Since calling it "the coronavirus" has taken hold in public conversation, the WHO can't ignore it... but the WHO has made plenty of other attempts to educate people that COVID-19 is one of many forms of coronavirus. I'm not a doctor, but I'm confident my read on this is correct, for whatever that's worth. Probably not much, but there ya go.
It's just my own, likely futile little attempt to add some precision and accuracy to the conversation.
