We have a CB that has almost the same build as our other CB but gives up a 4-7 yard cushion almost every time. Anybody know why this is? His tactics are set to close/medium

I'm seeing this with my CB today even though he's set on close. Not sure why.

cushion depends on the defensive play called. If the SIM calls a long pass defense, your guys will stay away quite some yards.
Besides that, there are a few "strange" defensive plays, such as "Runaway Corner" (strongside corner heading back and for the sideline until the catch is made). And if a WR got way to low speed (like 17), the CB will backpedal faster and give up like 5-7 yards cushion.

The CB's assess the play and the WR and if they think they are going to get beat they play back more, which is then modified by your setting somewhat. But even on close, if they are outmatched they will play off.

Hurricane, my level 23 CB was playing a level 14 WR this AM and was still playing off him. Also happened with him covering a TE. Maybe he thought it was going to be a long play for some reason.

That's the only other thing that would make sense. That was just the response I got from Bort and Serenity when I brought this up with both of them. They've been quiet vague with alot of my CB questions lately

Perhaps he was just too much faster than the WR?
