Stopped playing actively around season 20. I'm totally lost on builds. I know the key was to slow build and reach your main caps as soon as possible to get the level up boosts for them.

how has the game changed? is it still like that? whats glb 2 like?

Also when is the optimal day to create players and boost them for slow building?

You prolly saw the intro of Archetypes? Slow build is a bad word around here now. otherwise the race to caps is still in play.
GLB2 is worse you have to have the set abilities correct from start and build skills around them.
day 40 and boost on end season 48 to start You prolly find more on further seasons.

is there any benefit to boosting early or late on glb2? and any cap bonuses? or is it not a race to the caps?

for GBL2 its no race the boosts are longevity and the caps are what your abilities are. They cannot be changed one set at start.
instead its a matter of raising skills around those abilities. And as I returned from season 14 myself a bit new to me also..
The "stars" are the only items you can use to increase the cap of your skills, incremental.

A bit confusing? You have a pool of skill pt like exp here which you use to build skills
boost will give X amount of these pts like your daily training and used to increase the skills.
The caps Unknown to me but there is a limit on skills according to the ability pts

I don't think ST team exists in GBL2 as far as DC ether,
If you spot ValiantArcher many of those players could help on the subject.

I'm in the same boat as the guy who started this thread. I logged in today and retired 30+ players.

Why is slow building a bad word now? I always liked to boost anyway.

I remember there being an "ideal day" to create a guy.

saying that slow building is a bad word is a bit of a misnomer.... more like it's impossible. You can only train your abilities when you're on a team. When you're on a team, you'll get XP--no way around it. Combine that with the fact that leagues are now all age based instead of level based, it's just impossible to build any other way.

Slow building was based on the concept of building slowly, i.e. keeping your level as low as possible, for as long as possible, so you could train as many times as possible. Now there's only 1 speed, so either everything is slow build or nothing is slow build depending on your point of view.

the ideal day thing has changed a little -- any day from 40 to 48 is essentially the same because they standardized the off season so that everyone gets the same number of training points. As long as you use the off season boosts from L1 to L4, you'll be on the leading edge as far as max level per age goes.

In theory, even in the ultra long term, you could create a player right up until day 0 in the pre-season and still get all the retro active training points. You miss out on the off season boosts, which means your player will be worse off for his whole career--right up until plateau -- but once you get there, you get extra boosts available to catch up to everyone else at L79. So at max level for 5 seasons you'll be on par as far as level goes.

So, we're on day 27 now... so basically you have a couple weeks to kill. Maybe try creating (and retiring) a few players to get a feel for what you want.

Best advice I can give, is to ignore the name of the Archetypes and look at what bonuses they give. For example you can easily build a possession style WR (i.e. high Catching etc.) out of the Speedster archetype.

Also remember that all that flex you got back can be used to try GLB2. The big difference in GLB2 is there are no caps, or ALGs or anything like that. So you can spend your points pretty much where ever you want, as soon as you get them, to build the type of player you want. There's no advantage to hoarding your points. there's no training. it's as simple as -- Play in games, get points, spend points. For player building, the only skill comes from knowing what not to waste your points on for any given position.

You can make the argument that many of the forums here are dead. "Players looking" and "Teams looking" are veritable wastelands.
