i think besides shaving down the amount of teams per league/conference, bort should stop trying to fill an entire conference with human teams before filling the other. what always seems to happen is that one conference is filled with 16 human teams and 8 of them can't make the playoffs and in the other conference, there's only 4 human teams and the rest are cpu's.

i understand you want a good amount of competition, but based on that thought, he really should rank all the human teams straight down 1-32, then take #1 and put it in the eastern conference, and #2 in the western, #3 in the eastern, #4 in the western. in my opinion the competition would be divided more evenly and the postseason would be more fun.

understood, but that doesn't change my suggestion. even if he whittles it down from 32 to 12, if he fills it from the top down, the 2nd conference always tends to be a cakewalk.

whether the amount of teams in the league is 32, 18, 12, 6 or whatever, bort should split the human teams evenly so that the competition is even. this would also reduce the temptation for some to just buy a team to win a trophy in the weak conference. this usually happens because the competition in conferences are not evenly distributed.

and instead of ranking the teams based soley on records (because, heaven forbid, someone sandbags a season to end up in a lower league - unheard of, i know), why not include AVERAGE EFFECTIVE LEVEL and/or TOTAL PLAYER VALUE into the equation?

chemistry should also be affected by EL and PV. an owner trying to buy a team in a weak conference, then load it with fully boosted players should be penalized harshly by chem (if it even matters). but if the intention is to own that team long-term, then the chem will eventually build up to a non-issue (perhaps the following season).

Unfortunately, bort uses global rankings, which are based on record, and beyond the sandbagging you note, it's easy to simply schedule a bunch of rated games against equal comp. to manipulate the rankings. This is how Hedgehogs began this season as overall no. 1 and ranked as such for the tourney. I'm pretty sure they weren't doing it on purpose, they just wanted to get in some scrims and try out stuff -the effect is the opposite for another top team that just sits and waits - they get a lower seed. Nothing evil going on, just how it is

Wait.. someone would have to manually do this because they never figured out how to do it automagically.

I had two of my teams in the CPU conference this season. I still don't know how good we were because we only played 2 or 3 games that mattered.

Actually I'm pretty sure they did it on purpose, GLB tourney I think is based on EL, but I could be wrong.
