I understand if you retire a free player, you can build another in the empty slot. But just to be certain, can I choose to permanently retire (so the dot goes into my roster of retired dots), will I get the free slot back? A free dot has had a pretty decent career (3-time MVP) so you can see why I'm asking.

Yes you permanently retire just set it so you keep the name otherwise you cannot view him again. And yes, once you retire a free player you can create another free Dot.
