Is this a possibility or is the out of position penalty too harsh?

You can't just find a strength-build DE? That's gonna work better than a DT out-of-position.

It all depends on how well your the build on the DT is. Size matters, so he can't be too small or too big. Weight should be between 290 & 310 lbs, and a taller DT helps.
I know because I do this on a regular basis with a 3-4 Scheme, and I've had my share of success
