There are so many teams out there that dont even have a CPU punter, that with punts going 15 yards, the return man doesnt even get a chance to return the punt. There is no rule in pro football that says that players HAVE to call a fair catch if there is a defender is within 5 yards, so why must we be bound by this?

If the user wants to attempt it, let them, if they fumble, that is the risk they take.

Yup. It's the #1 weapon against quality returners. So much so now, it's almost standard practice.

Only if they increase the likelihood of fumbling the catch of the punt if defenders are very close. If you watch much football, you know that the majority of muffed punts result from trying to field a punt under immediate duress.

yep, let the returner decide, and make a fumble % increase as the defenders get closer. of course, i've long wanted better st tactics. there are just too many scenarios for a single tactic to cover them all.

Well the OP is talking about teams without punters. So these aren't games I am ever associated with. But you are right I don't want a simple player tactic that says return punts always, sometimes, never. I would want it done right with a small player advanced AI. But that would get complicated for the vast majority of agents.

I don't think it would be that difficult for agents to use a slider that controls the player's likelihood of attempting to field a punt under duress.

I fully agree with the OP.
I just called 28 fair catches out of the opposition CPU 33 punts.
What is ridiculous is that their OT punter averaged 10.1 yards per kick and even punted on 4th and inches managing 7 yards!
The game engine should recruit specialists to fill rosters properly - ie Kickers, Punters and also Returners.
This would at least makes games against CPU teams slightly more interesting.

I'd want more than just a slider tho. I want options. Sliders are lazy additions that add nothing of interest to the strategy of the game. Inside the 10? Let the ball go. Under two minutes trailing? Return it regardless. Up 3 under 2 minutes? Call fair catch. Adding a strategic ability to work over a CPU team isnt worth the time invested. Adding a fun strategy element for a players situational awareness? Fun for all levels of play.
