'Coz I could see a lot of people thinking to themselves, "Eh, if GLB 2.0 is gonna hit the public beta in a few months anyway, why keep playing GLB 1.0? Might as well save my time and Flex for the new game, and just watch some real football for the next few months instead."
This could be quite a problem. If GLB 1.0 becomes a wasteland while GLB 2.0 is still in the closed Alpha stage, that will really curb the enthusiasm of both newbies who stumble across GLB 1.0 and the few die-hards who remain. And a significant chunk of the people who bail out early on GLB 1.0 might decide in the meantime that they don't miss the game much after all, and thus might never bother to come back for GLB 2.0.
But, hey, just a paying customer here. Not like I've ever run an online game company before, so I'm sure I have this completely wrong.
.............
EDIT TO ADD:
Based on what Digital Daggers was saying in the main New Game thread, it sounds like Alpha for GLB 2.0 won't last very long, and then it'll go into Beta, presumably an open Beta.
We've also been told in the past by Bort and Catch (Bort rest his soul) that Flex bought in GLB will be fully transferable and spendable in whatever new game comes next.
Given those two factors, how the fuck can I justify telling all of my agents on the Palookas and the Paladins to keep spending Flex on boosting their current crop of dots? Any Flex that they spend now on GLB 1.0 will be that much less Flex that will be available to them for GLB 2.0.
I don't have the time or the money to spend on two games at once. I can either play GLB 1.0 or GLB 2.0, but not both. And since all of the time, energy, attention and excitement of both the staff and the user base will be focused on GLB 2.0, I would likely choose to jump to GLB 2.0 and abandon GLB 1.0 -- and thus abandon my current teams here.
Might as well just tell all of my boys right now that we're packin' it up. Might as well sell both teams now to re-coup the Flex cost of owning the teams for this season, and I might as well stop boosting my current batch of players. And since my players will be unboosted players who no longer have a team, I might as well retire them right now as well.
What am I missing here?
Seriously, what am I missing here? As cynical as I can be about Bort's business acumen at times, it's hard for me to believe that even he could be this stupid as to have not thought any of this shit all the way through.
