If I would like to re-sign/keep players for future seasons, do I have to extend their contracts to 2/3 years before Day 40? Or is there another option to do this?

Yes.
Keep in mind as well...... you have to send at least a 2 season contract...... as a 1 season contract would still expire at the end of this season.
The 1st season on a contract always counts as the current season. 2 Season would expire at end of season 37. 3 season would expire at end of season 38.
