If he's in zone, and it isn't a deep zone, he will leave his man to cover someone else in the zone before the ball is thrown. He will chase the ball after it is thrown, but until then he stays in his coverage.
If he was set to a deep zone, he would not leave that man to go cover someone else unless they were also in that zone and were the deeper threat.
Not having anyone covering that WR in man coverage is where the mistake lies.

No CB in real football is going to leave his man with no help over the top, if this is a case it needs to be fixed.
