If I want to run a medium distance style passing attack prior to the pros, how should I be setting the QB tactics?

Open/distance, bullet/loft, favorite.

It has been years since I dealt with QB tactics, so I may be out of date, but this is how I always recommended it in the past:
75 bullet because receivers have trouble catching anything higher at the lower levels,
90+ open man, otherwise the QBs throw into double and triple coverage too often,
never set favorites because those players get bonuses, but all the other players get penalized.

About what I'd do. Though I set 100+ open man. Then control passing depth by plays, routes and progression.

What I used to fine on 100% open was that if my primary was covered right away, it got dumped off often even when the tactics said not to.

Don't put a HB or FB first in your progression if you want a medium to long play. That's what I found caused that for me. Could also be WR routes that are very short.

Also the Blitz Reaction and HB/FB Dump settings in the QBs tactics play a role in this as well.

I never figured it out because the RBs were not in the progressions, and the QB was not supposed to dump off, yet was. I do not recall if I considered blitz reaction.

If they aren't in the progressions at all, the QB is certainly on some sort of Dump Pass tactic. I always take that tactic off so it doesn't screw with the progressions. If they are dumping early it is a blitz/hurry reaction or the HB/FB is in your first progression and they just got too open due to the weird coverage manipulation the DC managed to hit. (by far one of my biggest GLB annoyances as an OC)

As far as the favorite receiver goes. As I have always understood it, it gives a benefit to those listed and a penalty to all others. But I am being tolld that it affects progressions only. I have never heard that before. Which is true?

What are you referring to as lower levels?

It simply makes a given WR appear more "open" to the QB, cuz he likes him more and is willing to force it more. 2nd favorite target is a smaller bonus than favorite target to how "open" the player looks to the QB.

QB's are more likely to throw to players that look more open to them (even without the VA, higher catch-score players look more open than a lower catch-score guy with defenders at the same distance).

This tactic is an oldschool way to target good players before customer progressions were added to the game. Obsolete really.

Also the "open man vs pass distance" slider is again another archaic QB tactic that should be removed from the game. If you could just set your players to 100% open man, that'd be best, as I guarantee any other point on this slider doesn't do what you'd logically think it does.

I can elaborate if truly necessary I guess. Unrelated but click link my sig for build tips.

If you have progressions set, does favorite target affect the play at all then?

yes

it will just make the QB more likely to "pull the trigger" when/if he reaches that dot in the progression

but I would not recommend using fav's

Right now I've got a team of 160 day old players
a QB with a total of 140 in Throwing
and a corps of receivers with an avg of 78 in Catching (High of 87 and one with a low of 66)
Should we already be at +100 on the bullet?

I've got another team of 80 day old players
That QB has 115 in catching with receivers ranging from a low of 46 to a high of 87.
Is it too soon to go 100?

"If you increase your QBs catching, it makes him throw better... cuz he knows how receivers want to catch."
