I am pretty new to this and am having the damdest time figuring out how to keep my DE from dropping into pass coverage on nearly 50% of his plays.

Is it a team defense setting or is this something I can fix either through build or personal tactics?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Here is my build FWIW

Zone coverage will do that.

You didn't post a play, but DE's will drop into a run zone coverage (it's not pass coverage).

I don't think its fully the fault of zone coverage. We were playing man to man, and it was still doing that with the same frequency. We have been testing outside vs inside run D, and that seems to have much more influence on the ends dropping back.

I like how everyone says it is zone coverage and inside/outside run focus, and states it like it is a fact. I believe I have done as much research on this as anyone out there, and I can positively state with 100% authority that even going 100% man coverage, and 100% inside coverage DE's will still drop off of the line, no matter if their individual settings are play the pass, balanced or play the run. I have tried out at least 20 different combinations of these settings over the past 2 seasons, as well as talking to 7-8 other D Coordinators who run successful defenses, and all of us have the same problem to some extent.

Playing 100% inside run focus seems to decrease the frequency with which it occurs, but be careful with inside run focus, especially if you blitz a lot. The sim mostly sends LB on blitzes up the middle, and you can get burned really bad on outside runs.

The best advice is just to deal with it, and make sure your DE's have better builds than mine, so they make the most of their opportunities.

It's actually a Containment defensive play. The DE moves outside to keep the QB and HB contained to ensure no outside runs.

I didnt post it saying that 100% this is what the cause is. I even said we had been testing it, and that it seemed to help out if your not wanting the DE to drop back

I read your post and agreed with you. I was talking to the person who said;

Comments like this are made all over, mostly by people who don't own/GM/DC a team, and are just paroting what someone once wrongly informed them of. I have the utmost respect for anyone else who has tried different settings and either found one that works, or is at least working in that direction. As I said, I have talked to and made friends with several other DC's who work together and try different things out. I will always (well almost) answer PM's from people who are trying to work towards this, and share any knowledge I have in return for them doing the same. But I can't stand people who chime in with false information like that. Zone does have it's place, and is certainly not bugged, and it definitely isn't a sole reason for DE's dropping into coverage.

from my experience the dropping back isn't so bad. my DE averages around 6 tackles a game, and most of them are usually from dropping back. it helps if its a pitch or a short pass. in fact i've gotten several pass deflections from covering TE's and occasional WR's who are foolish enough to come by.

imo the dropping back has nothing to do with the settings it is just something that is built into the programming. so like another guy stated above me, consider that while determining ur build.

The idea of the containment defensive "route" is to make sure the DE doesn't get blocked by the Tackle, and are pretty much completely free to make the tackle on a toss/sweep play.

I hate when it does that, but it has not been a problem for me at all this season, We stopped playing zone at all and have not had any problems since.

I GM and DC 3 teams btw.

The same thing happens to me, except even when the cb is covering the wr he still goes way out of the play.
