What makes a DE in flats decide to rush the QB? Sometimes they just float around in the flats the entire duration of the play, and sometimes they break their assignment and rush the QB. Is it a vision check or something?

This one was in a rookie game today: http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=2368712&pbp_id=2428247
but I've seen it at multiple levels of the game on occasion.

if there isn't a HB or FB that needs to be covered coming out of the back field they will usually rush the QB.

I see them just floating around in the flats for the entire play quite often even when no one is around them.

That one is different. You are correct in assuming DE's in flats linger though. They will hit the flat(the zone they are supposed to cover) and wait till something enters it then engage. OR they will engage the outgoing back for a bit then remain in zone. That RDE starts to do that but then hooks to the strong side in an apparent QB rush. But it SA's or something triggering on the FB cover. If it was a QB rush it would have been line of sight, not that strange curl route.

I think their Aggressiveness tactic plays a role as well. The more aggressive they are, the sooner they'll abandon their zone and rush the QB.

I'd agree with this thought.

hmm that would be an interesting concept. Nothing to support it in the "rules" but its plausible. Cool even.

And yes, there definitely is a variation as the OP notes. I know of no other reason so maybe Novus is on to something.

Heh.

You realize, though, it's actually pronounced "noe-vuss", not "naw-vuss"... it's Latin, so it's a long O sound. It means "young."

Nope. It's Latin. Long O.

Don't like it? Go hop in a time machine and convince one of the Caesars to change it. I'd suggest Nero... he was batshit-insane enough that he might actually go for it.
