Taking a job mid-season would be quite a challenge... you'd literally have to hit the ground running.
To do it right, taking over as a new coach just takes time. You have to analyze the dots you have, figure out if the depth chart needs to be adjusted, tweak your AI to be able to make the best use of the players on the new team. And mid-season, you simply don't have that time, because the next game is 48 hours away -- if not sooner. So while you're getting settled into your new job, you have meaningful games coming up fast.
Taking over a team during the off-season is just easier. You have
way more time to get everything set up before your first meaningful game arrives. You're able to cut and recruit players more easily, something that is very difficult to do mid-season. And you can ask people to reset VAs and Eq, which isn't possible at all mid-season.
No smart coach would want to take over a team mid-season. And quite frankly, you shouldn't want any coach who
is willing to try, because they're probably too dumb to realize what a monumental and hopeless task they're taking on, and people like that tend to be bad coaches anyway.
So, yeah. Should probably try to recruit your coaches during the offseason.
