WARNING: NOOBIE DC

Now lets just say, offense is in shotgun, and they are gonna do a QB run to the outside.

Is it better for me to send defenders into the Flats? Or do i just put them outside wide and set them to blitz

BTW These are prep players.

Or even Goalline formation

this is a question of preference, and playing to your players abilities, and strategy, more than anything
thus its not easily answered.

first of all, you need the right players.
those DB blitzes work better if they can tackle.
the DEs into the flats works better if they have the agility to actually make that play.

i love when DCs send those slow dudes into the flats cuz my high agi rQB
cuts inside and picks up big yardage. it can be tough against really agile DEs tho.

i would say vs an overly fast rQB, especially if his blockers are having trouble keeping up
the outside safety blitzes work best. even if they have a fast TE who can get there to block,
if he's weak as a blocker a good safety will blow that play up.

now, if were talking about a rQB who can follow his blockers, and good blockers to boot,
then the DB blitz can burn you, becuz that bTE or pulling OT can pancake or dominate the DB
then the QB is running free. so the strategy the OC uses plays a big part in what works best

goallline do both imo

i just saw the prep part, imo at that point safety blitzes are best

^Okay.

So I see you prefer to blitz them because they lack the agility to make a play on the ball?

Sounds good, I have a few plays where I have two players blitzing from wide,
would be it wise to set one into the flat, and blitz one? Or blitz both wide?

Also, whats the effect if I put a person to man cover an HB who will be receiving a pitch or a sweep.

Will the player fly in like a blitz? or?

when possible, we blitz blitz blitz, and try for a TFL on every play
{thats how our killer FS won D MVP last season)
i'm no a big fan of flat zones, they seem to go a bit too wide,
and i like to attack, not play wimpy zone lol, bu that is just me.

there are occasions where those flat zones are useful.
for example, if they screen pass a lot with the rQBs,
blitzes can get you burnt, flat zone tends to work well.
sometimes when a rQB is too dangerous, or there bTEs/ pulling Olinemen too good
you just wanna use that flat zone to force them inside and have someone waiting to make the tackle for short gain.

we use some plays with 2 outside blitzers, and some w/ one and a flat zone.
like i said it depends on the specific situation.

also note: when i say outside blitzers, they are rarely set to blitz.
usually its like this, with the FS used as an example here:
cover man w/out move> HB weak> blitz

Well, I know this is the level where eHBs and RQBs are finally getting the agility to bounce the plays outside and really beable to hit the sidelines, that's why I am gonna try some zone flats. I have a feeling at higher levels runners would just cut inside leaving your defender on the ground.

What is the effect of QB spy?

the better the vision and agility, the better the reaction.
our FS {not even very good vis atp) had 12 sacks last season, never blitzing-
only HB weak> blitz or FB weak>blitz

for the most part, it works just like a blitz.
the DB will 'blitz' straight at the HB who gets the pitch,
usually with no noticible delay at all, unless-
a. they fail a vision check and are slow to react
b. they have suck agility and cant react fast enough after they see the play

with a top DB, that won't really b a problem, but with lesser players they may react too slow
giving a WR time to block them. on the other hand, they wont do that awful thing where
they run right past the HB to the QB before they realize he dont have the ball no more

QB spy is total garbage IMO,
unless you know for 100% sure that the QB will be running

Fixed your post. It's total garbage even IF you're 100% sure that the QB will be running.

i mean, when a DC puts the MLB on QB spy and thinks that will do anything,
i just laugh, and let Tif run for 200, thats what i mean by garbage

edit: however, if you set up the correct kind of defense to stop the rQB,
and then ON TOP of that have some players set to QB spy,
that might really shut down the cutback runs...
idk. personally, i have not tried it ever.
like i said, you'd have to be 100% sure its a QB run;
anything else and you are just assigning the player to be absolutely useless.
so i never bother with the QB spy it seems far too garbagey.

As an all-rushing OC, I can tell you right now I get really annoyed by teams that put their DEs into the flats.

However, it's still beatable. It's just annoying to figure out how to beat it.

Really, the best approach is to use a variety of defensive plays and just stay as unpredictable as possible on D. If I know what you're going to be doing, even if it's a really well-designed defensive play, there's a pretty good chance I'll be able to find some way to attack it. But if you're rotating through 5 or 6 different defensive plays against each offensive formation, that's gonna make me pull my hair out as an OC.
