Am I doing this correct?

Creating a custom Defense and I want to know if I am doing this right before I go make a bunch of plays.

Just for an example, the offense is in the I Form and I and in 3-4. I want the LILB to cover which ever of the HB or FB go to his side.

Do I put the LILB coverage assignment as 1:HB strong then 2:FB strong?

correct. But there are Iform plays where both the HB and FB go to the same side so be aware of that or someone will be wide open.

Yep, as long as both the HB and FB don't go to the strong side. Then the FB won't be covered, at least not by the LILB.
Sometimes counter plays mess the assignments up though, where the defender will go to it's next assignment.

Oh and you will likely want the use "cover man without move" in most cases like that.

So then would it be smart to make a 3rd cover option for the plays? Making one of them go across the line to cover them if they go to the same side. Usually its a screen pass because I don't see many plays with both the FB and HB going to the same side.

I would set the SS to cover the HB strong and LILB to cover the FB strong and then use a second cover option for them if they HB and/or FB doesn't go to that side.

You can do that. Sometimes it might even work too!

The problem with using multiple coverage options like that is that your dot has to keep making successful Vision checks to move from one coverage option to the next, on down the line. The more coverage options he has to go through, the more Vision checks he has to pass -- and the greater the chance that at some point he's going to mis-read the play and make the wrong decision before he can even GET to the correct coverage assignment.

That said, sometimes you just have to use those HB Left/HB Right coverage options. Just keep in mind they have their limitations and problems too, and try to minimize the number of potential coverage options each dot has. Sometimes the best option is to give him two options and then let him default to a Zone, and hope he picks up an uncovered HB or FB that way.

I like to do

HB Strong, FB Strong, FB Weak
HB Weak, FB Weak, FB Strong

If you position good enough they can get to the other side of the field and get the job done on those plays where both go to the same side, sometimes they don't.

That seems redundant. You could just as easily go

HB Strong, FB
HB Weak, FB

with the advantage to this way being that if the FB goes Weak, the top defender has one less vision check to pass in order to start covering the FB.

I've done that before... there were still times when it didn't work, but it worked better than my crazy 3-check and 4-check coverage schemes that I tried before that.

I do that a lot when covering with LBs. I often use a LB to cover W/O move FB then safeties or CBs to cover W/O move HBweak and HBstrong. I usually cover the WR or blitz if the HB does not go to that side.
