That SS was probably assigned to cover the HB if he went to the strong site first before blitzing. That is why his first couple steps were towards the inside and by the time he recognized that it was a rushing play and abandoned the pass coverage, it was too late. I put that play in just because of this, but just didn't call it enough...

Remember that anytime a defensive player is set to cover someone, it takes a second or two for them to recognize that it's a rushing play. You generally don't want a player set inside CB1/2 at the LoS with outside containment duties to be set like that as their first step or two will be towards the person they cover, and in this case, a step or two towards the center of the field where the HB is lined up. Like LE said, either blitz them from that spot, or more them outside of CB1/2 so they are still in a good spot to contain an outside run even after the first 1-2 seconds.

It's little details like this that can make or break a defense. Oakdad is lucky that I didn't spam this play all game as I did notice it during my scouting. In hind sight, I should have...

the idea was taken from a segment that Chris Cater does for the NFL. It's not intended to be correct grammar. I have a degree in Communications and Public Speaking but decided to post it like he does when he delivers it on Sundays. It's all in fun and it gives others a chance to look at things that could be corrected to make their team better. If no one else is offended I will continue the post.
