At what age do special abilities really start to make a difference and need to be invested in?

Depends on the position and build. But generally after you have used every skill point that you want in skills.

In the build plans I've been putting together lately, I've been pushing SAs all the way 'til the last season of people's builds. I just want to squeeze every last drop out of Auto Level Gains (ALGs) that I can.

One could probably get away with putting points into SAs after their dots are 200 days old or so, to be honest, but yeah, the longer you wait, the better it probably is for your build.

To directly answer you, SAs can make a difference at ANY level of the game, but they don't get ALGs, so putting points into them early on is a bad idea. A VERY bad idea.

you can always invest in AEQ and pick an SA you want to work on to add.. That way when you get older you can get an SA (if you only use 1 piece of AEQ) up to like 6 without spending a single SP.

if it's an end of the tree SA it's really beneficial (because they cost double the SP). That being said, % pieces are still king.

That's what I like to do. Do the last on my tree, then not worry about having to invest any SP into it.. Means you can really stack up on other trees even more and save SP for attributes. From what I've been gathering. A lot of dots are going with 2 pieces of % and 2 of SA.... So, if you do 2 different SA's and have 1 be the last on the tree and other be 2nd to last on a tree, then use your custom piece to cap off that last SA.. you can save even more SP in the end.

^ not best plan for most all positions

3 % AEQ and % in your CEQ is best IMO.
Never SA in CEQ IMO
If go for 4 AEQ then maybe go with an end of tree SA IF it's a worthy one.(for example, you would not want FG for a QB, it sucks)

If you do get an SA AEQ, you should at least go ahead and try and get it to at least 4 naturally so it finishes at 10 with the+6 from the EQ.

no

QB - 2-3 PQ% pieces, 1 PD% piece

O-Line, blocking TE, FB - 2-3 HB% pieces and maybe 1 SA

WR & rTE - 2-3 CB%, 1 F%

HB/offensive FB will use combinations of BT%, F%, CB%

D-Line - 2 BB%, 1 MT%

DB - AF%, MT%, DB%

some also use FF%, I%, etc - but most people are using at least 3% pieces
