What is the purpose of a QB Spike in GLB?

I know it takes 2 seconds off the clock.

But thats not useful.

Whats the point?

To stop the clock when you don't have any TOs left afaik.

Yeah I didnt phrase that well.

I mean what exactly does it do as far as game time goes.

Does it make the previous play take less time?

Or the subsequent play?

Or both?

And by how much?

He's asking if you run a spike if the offense hurries to spike the ball. I haven't noticed this happening, tbh.

It didn't used to, but Bort made a change a few seasons back to speed up the QB spike play.

Do you watch football? I just want to know if we need to explain why they spike the ball IRL or if there is just something about the game that you don't get.

Yes...it does shorten the time to run the play. Example: We ran the ball for 2.5 yards and 32 seconds ran off the clock to run the next play. Yet....at the end of the 4th quarter we ran the ball for 3 yards and then spiked the ball and only 14 seconds ran off the clock. So it saved 18 seconds from running off the clock by spiking the ball.

This was something that a few other people and I raised a fuss about last season... (I think you were in that fight first, whodey, if I remember correctly!) We found out that teams actually seemed to take slightly MORE time to line up for a spike play than for a normal play, which meant it was actually smarter NOT to call spikes. (Made no sense to me... on a spike play, everyone just has to line up, set for a second, and the QB takes the snap and spikes it. No pre-snap reads needed, no audibles needed, no blitz-protection changes needed... none of the extra stuff that slows an offense down pre-snap is needed on a spike play.)

We took the numbers to the Bugs Mods, and they agreed it wasn't working as intended and fixed it. Or said they fixed it, anyway. I haven't had the patience to research it any further to verify it. But when a play ends, if the AI calls for a spike for the next play, the offense (supposedly) will hurry up to the line and get set faster for the spike play than they would for a regular play.

...

Just, uh... don't call for a spike on 4th down. Or if the clock is already stopped after the previous play.

Yeah, I don't think one of my teams has been in a situation that called for a spike in several seasons.

We just used a few spike plays in a tournament game we lost yesterday. It does work.

Yes Novus....Myself and Coreyls18 fought hard for them to get that fixed and they finally did. Like I said....as of yesterday we used spike plays and it did shorten the amount of time that would have normally ran off the clock so it does work.

We have it set up for it be spike on 1st or second down if we have no timeouts left and the clock is running.

Yeah, I thought I remembered you being in that fight. You guys got the Bugs Mods attention with a couple of great examples, and then I took that ball and ran with it and gave them even more examples.

Every now and then, we mere mortals can get stuff fixed. Be polite, be firm, be persistent, and be factual, and the mods and admins will listen. Gotta do all 4, though... try to skip one of those, and they'll ignore you.

Yeah, his question makes me wonder if he watches football.

"Does it make the previous play take less time or the subsequent play or both?"

I was going to relate it to what he would see if he DID watch football so that it made sense in the context of the game, but if he didn't watch football, I couldn't dot that.

I know why you do it in NFL. To stop the clock, to get time to prepare a new play rather than rush one ad hoc.

The question is trying to ask exactly what are the mechanics in GLB. The time saving is the only reason. So I am wondering just where the time saving is and how much is it?
