X and inches
X and 0.5 yards

for purposes of OAI or DAI, are these 1 yard or 0 yards?

I assume its the same for both OAI and DAI, right?

why don't decimals seem to work right for me in AI? I am doing something wrong?

I don't use decimals. Seems like a bit of overkill and I'm not even sure it makes any difference.

So... if the AI doesn't use decimals.. Why are there situations why watching replays where it's like 2nd and 10.5 or something? I've seen 3rd and .5 before. That's why when I've done my AI's I've done like 0 to 3.5 for short yardage and 4 to 7 for like medium or something.

Your inputs should overlap. If you have 0-3.5 for short and 4+ for medium your AI most likely will have a gap in it.

Mmmmm. Good to know. That could explain some questionable play calls in short yardage.

I'm thinking the sim will read 3.5 as 3 yards anyway. Best to have 0-3 short/3-7 medium or 0-4 for short/4-7 medium to make sure everything is covered.

AI is read from top to bottom, so if you use 0-3 and 3-7, then it will use 0-3 for 3 yards. If you use what Dub J said, that's how it will work.

I had issues with this too back in s10. Yes, make sure your A.I. inputs overlap. At first, you'd think this would cause issues, but thankfully it just uses the top input of the two contradictory outputs.

I've got my inputs set like this:
1st down
2nd down (v long) 11-100
2nd down (long) 9-11
2nd down (medium) 4-9
2nd down (short) 0-4
3rd down (Long) 9-100
3rd down (Medium) 6-9
3rd down (short) 4-6
3rd down (VERY short!) 0-4

So for example, on a 2nd & 4 it uses my 2nd down (medium). On 2nd & 3.5, it uses 2nd down (short).

thanks, but I'm still not getting it about the fractions from OP...

suppose I have overlapping:

1st INPUT: 4th and 0 to 0
2nd INPUT: 4th and 0 to 1
3rd INPUT: 4th and 0 to 2
etc

which is triggered by "4th and inches?" which by "4th and 0.5?" which by 4th and G from the 0 yard line?

I realize I'll probably use the same outputs for some/all, but for argument's sake or vs. teams that scouting shows do very different things in 4th and 0.5 and 4th and inches and 4th and 1 and 4th and 2.

Would have to be 0-1.

still confused...so there is no way in AI to have one output triggered by 4th and G from the 0, one by 4th and inches and another by 4th and 0.5? then I would assume its the same for the OAI (can't be set for three different but similar scenarios)-- so why have the distinction in the play-by-play calls?

Haven't you ever seen a play where its 3rd and 1 and the play says you ran it for 1 yard yet its 4th and inches. You actually ran it for inches but the play just rounded it to 1.

if the way you posted is the order you have them in your DAI, then the one I underlined and bolded should be the one that fires if it is 4th and inches or 4th and 0.5. AI's read from top to bottom and that is the first one that would match.

There is no 4th and 0 to go. If you have 0 to go then you have a 1st down

4th and G from 0yrd line seems impossible as there is no 0 yard line. If ball is on the goal line (which I suppose could be the 0yrd line) then you have scored already.
