Forum > Suggestions > D-leagues: Why they are a pitfall of GLB and how they can be used as a tool for growth

First off, I realize that pretty much anything having to do with changing how the d-leagues work is NGTH. That being said, this change is so minimal that I can't see how it could possibly be negative, and I hope mods take a moment to read the suggestion before locking.

Without further ado, my suggestion is a simple one: allow the purchase of d-leagues. Before everyone goes up in arms, hear me out. This ownership is a restricted one: no tactics to change, no contract offering ability, no stadiums to build, no depth chart to change. In fact, this ownership is a title for access to a forum.

What is the purpose of this suggestion then, if owners couldn't do anything to the teams? The owners would act as mentors in the forum. They would help guide players who recently joined through the inner working of GLB, something that is most certainly lacking in the game today.

When I joined GLB 4 years ago, I was fortunate enough to have someone else in the d-league I signed my first player to, that told me to go find a human team and not waste my time there. Without that, I was stuck on a random CPU team with nigh dead forums and no idea what to do. That was 4 years ago, when GLB was a pretty exciting place and plenty of member were still around. Now, I'm certain d leagues are complete ghost towns. How much fun is that to new members? It no wonder people stop playing.

The users who by teams would presumably be people who are committed to seeing GLB thrive and grow, and due to it really being just forum access, it really won't have any appeal to people who aren't invested in GLB. What's more, this is an easy way for GLB to make a little cash. I don't think it should be expensive to buy a d league team, maybe 100-200 flex, but money is money.

suggestion in a nutshell:
Allow for users to pay up to 200 flex to buy a d-league team, in which they only have forum access (no tactics, depth chart, recruiting, etc). These owners would then act as guides to new GLB users by answering questions and posting relevant guides.

Personally, I feel like this is an easy step to take to hopefully have GLB retain more long term membership as opposed to having people join and quit due to not knowing what to do.

Thanks,
Pete Carroll

Edit: to clarify, d-leagues would still operate in the same manner. Users would join and then receive offers from d league teams when they make a player, nothing changes. Perhaps they could make it so teams with owners are filled first, but thats just an extra.

Clearly the indirect approach isn't working.

Because I know there's people who want GLB to succeed. It's not for everyone, I realize this. If this were implemented, even if only a small handful did it, it would be a boon to the game.

maybe call it "sponsor" instead of "buy" -- and perhaps instead of teams, sponsors could support an entire league, with access to that league's forum

alternatively, instead of this COSTING flex, maybe each league sponsor would become a sort of mod for that particular D-league and get RPs or FPs like a moderator

Futile suggestion.

The people who "want GLB to thrive" don't actually want to help it do so.

See: GLBWiki...people would rather bitch and rant on the forums about inaccurate information rather than fix it.

Until the game owners want it to succeed there is not much we can do.
We have all seen that post. It's over.

Reward could be naming and avatar "rights".

I don't see much harm in it and its a way for Bort to get some flex off the small spenders or extra from 9 team owners.

There are people who have played this game for 20 or more seasons and can't even begin to play well. All the tutorials in the world wont provide what they need to become better. I'm not trying to be nasty, I've offered help to a number of Agents, build AIs both offensive & defensive, explained how and why they work. Baby sat their teams for a season only to watch them return to what they were doing before and post in their forums information for their team contrary to everything done and said.

This game isn't hard, just latch on to a team that wins, watch and learn.

The Suggestion itself isn't a good one.

However... the goal he's trying to reach IS a good one. He just picked a road that won't actually get there.

Definitely would like to see some sort of system for having experienced players get rewarded for mentoring less-experienced players. If I was getting Reward Points to do so, I'd carve out some time for that for sure. But right now, there's not much of a reward at all for putting in the time and effort to help newbies, so I really don't bother.

There's more than a few people who play GLB who know a LOT about the inner-workings of the game who just keep that knowledge locked up in their own head, or only share it with a small handful of close in-game friends, because they have no incentive to spread that knowledge any further. That's an untapped resource that Bort and Catch need to figure out how to tap into.

Eh, if someone grabs a "Mentor" title just for the Reward Points and doesn't actually do any mentoring, GLB can always just take back the title and the RP.

Any reward system can be abused. That doesn't mean you never have any reward systems at all. You just have to put in safeguards to cut down on that abuse.
