It's obviously a major problem every offseason. There will never be a 1 system fits all for pass blocking. Just take a look at the changelog as they do 360's with the code trying to patch everything and then re-patch 2 seasons later.

Aug 27, 2012
- Fixed a few bad blitz blocking pickups

Aug 13, 2012
- Fixed a few bad blitz blocking pickups
- Fixed bad blocking decisions vs a few blitzes

Aug 8, 2012
- Fixed bad blocking decisions vs a few blitzes

Jun 13, 2012
- Addressed issue where pass blockers tended to not fall back far enough to intercept far outside blitzers such as CBs or safeties

Apr 13, 2012
- Added an new internal method to better deal with specific "exploit blitz" situations when normal blocking logic doesn't pick them up as desired, and added a couple of special cases vs CB blitzes
- More adjustments made to HB/FB pass block positioning. They are now better at cutting off outside blitzes and don't float around as much.

Mar 6, 2012
- Fixed pass block line shift not working vs certain blitz setups
- Fixed some pass block path calculations to better form a pocket and pick up certain blitzes better

Jan 18, 2012
- Fix bad HB/FB pass blocking pathing vs certain blitzes

Dec 22, 2011
- Added o-line blocking slide logic to better block inside gaps on overload blitzes vs pass blocking

====================================================================================================

The Answer

Its time to add some new basic tactics.

Oline blocking logic
1. zone
2. slide left
3. slide right
4. slide to overload
5. inside out (man, basically blocking by numbering the D front inside out)
etc.. whatever u want to come up with

Still require the vision checks to see incoming blitzers and read correctly when choosing man.

What this would do is allow different teams to choose different blocking schemes and therefor no single blitz would work against all teams. Also teams would be able to adjust game to game very simply through a drop down menu on the teams basic tactics page.

And for those of you who will complain that this adds more work for teams and coordinators to do, you obviously have never spent much time changing plays and AI's to work around a blitz. This is a simple 1 click tactic change when anticipating a certain type of blitz.

Also teams would be able to build different types of oline builds based on the oline logic they prefer to use.

Not that your idea isn't good, but I oppose it simply for the reason that it will present more blocking issues, more opportunities for some blitz that breaks blocking and more needed blocking code changes.

This. +1 if bort & co can address both side of the ball with this.

Ah, but if someone uncovers a particular blitz type that ALWAYS works against "Slide Right," you know what I can do on offense in the meantime?

Switch to "Slide Left."

As always happens in this game, everyone else would stop using Slide Right as well because of the bug, someone would post about it in Bugs or in Suggestions, and Bort and Catch would spend the next 6 months trying to fix it. But at least during those 6 months, we can just use Slide Left instead.

Right now, if someone uncovers a particular blitz type that ALWAYS works period, you know what I can do on offense in the meantime?

Nothing. Not a damn thing.

Snakes's suggestion ain't perfect. But it's better than what we have now. And as a wise man once said...

Don't let "perfect" be the enemy of "good."

I mean, here's the thing...

Right now in GLB, there's only one type of pass-blocking. That's it. And Bort and Catch have been working for a ridiculously long time to try to come up with a one-size-fits-all pass-blocking scheme that can't be cheaply exploited at one extreme and that can't always insta-stop all blitzes at the other extreme.

They will fail. NO SUCH SCHEME EXISTS.

Just like every defensive play has a weakness, every blocking scheme has a weakness as well. Instead of trying to come up with the one magical, perfect blocking scheme that gets it all rightly balanced, it's time for Bort and Catch to come up with multiple schemes and let us pick the one we want to use. Let each scheme have a weakness, and let the defense find and attack that weakness.

That's what I do on offense right now: I scout the opponent's defense, look for weaknesses in their plays, and attack them. And the defense can make my life harder by giving me multiple defensive looks to study leading up to our game, and then surprise me with entirely new plays that try to anticipate how I'll attack.

Yep. As a DC, I'd rather give the offense options to counter with and get back some options myself (such as the ability to place LBs freely again rather than the nonsensical CB/FS/SS blitzes or other nerfs to LB blitzes in general).

I'd be fine with that. If the offense gets this, the defense should DEFINITELY get the full DPC back, as far as I'm concerned.

Let us play football. Take off the training wheels.
