Miami, FL (AP)—No more Hurricanes?
The Miami Hurricanes have recently been violently forced by the GLB regime to change the name of their organization to the the Miami 'Cyclones' in order to fit some random 'code of law' the league has developed.
Though now, officially listed as the Miami 'Cyclones' the Hurricanes have yet to give up their previous name. After all, the team was formed as the Hurricanes and are still the Hurricanes. Players on the team have been quoted to say that they refuse to be recognized as the 'Cyclones'.
The outspoken strong safety D'Quell Washington has been quoted to say, "This is absolute bullsh*t! How is the league going to come and here and tell us who we are. We are the f*cking Hurricanes as far as I'm concerned and we ain't gonna be disrespected."
In fact, many of the players on the team have refused to accept the 'Cyclones' as their name. Starting cornerback LaDarius Arrington has stated, " Write us down as the Cyclones officially, but we are still the Hurricanes. I'm still a Cane and so is everybody else on the team. Just because someone calls us the Cyclones doesn't mean that we are the Cyclones."
The Miami Hurricanes had a successful season last year, going 12-4, and the name change came as a surprise. The reasoning behind the forced change was 'copyright infringement' and the league does seem to have the law on its side. However, trademark laws can be extremely blurry as to what is exactly copyright infringement. The Miami Hurricanes of GLB do not make a profit by using their the name or put the name in a bad light. In fact, these Hurricanes have no association with the real life Miami Hurricanes but rather just use the name as a way to identify themselves.
So what happens now?
After talking to a GM of the Miami Hurricanes, we've learned of a request the organization would like to make. Much like the recent 'Pac-Man' Jones scenario, the Hurricanes would like to still be called the Hurricanes. Here's a statement from this particular GM.
The Miami Hurricanes would kindly request that the media, fans, and players still refer to us as the Hurricanes. We started as the Hurricanes and are still the Hurricanes. The name 'Cyclone' is just for decoration purposes and has no bearing on this team. It is not a replacement name, nickname, or any kind of name. It is just 8 letters with absolutely no meaning. Using the word 'Cyclones' in association with the team is considered disrespectful to the organization and players.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation."
Whether or not the Hurricanes are still called the Hurricanes, the team does have a point. I mean, who's ever heard of a 'Cyclone' hitting the coasts of Florida?
