in the WL alone, there are 18 punters averaging more than 49 yards per punt. my punter who is at the end of his 1st year of decline averaged over 50. his last game, out of 35 punts, 10 went for over 60 and that seems fairly normal.

since return averages have nosedived this season to more lifelike, then the punt distances should also be more lifelike.

The top WL punter in avg was 52.7.

The top NFL avg was 50.9 http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/punting/sort/grossAvgPuntYards

Only 5 punters in WL were above 50. 9 http://goallineblitz.com/game/stats.pl?season=27&league_id=280&conference_id=0&stat=kicking&sort=punt_yards/punts&playoffs=0&stat_type=raw

So I'm not saying it would be impossible to change...but it would have to be very very small change...we're talking less than a yard difference for a season avg otherwise it could go really wrong quickly.

yet only 2 nfl teams averaged 49 yards vs 18 in WL. and its not even the average that is the worst, a declining punter hitting nearly a third of his punts over 60 is ridiculous. i'd be shocked if any nfl team came even close to that percentage.

I would like to see punters nailing it 80 yards down the field.

ok. like i said the numbers show that GLB is a tad higher than the NFL. But if you take it back just 1 yard avg on all punters I think they will fall really close.

More than that and you've went too far.

3-4 yards would be more accurate. take the entire nfl and their average was 45.2 vs 48.9 for the WL. and like i said, its the number of 60 yard punts that is the real issue, not the average. reduce the number of punts under 35 and over 60 and we end up with a better all around average and individual punts. anytime averages are involved, i thought everyone knew that you pretty much pull out the very top and very bottoms to get a true read on what is "average".

Something should probably be done here, but it has to be done carefully to scale back punts at the high end only, or averages at university level and the like will end up at 30 or something and it won't even be worth punting at those levels.

well if we're talking 3-4 yards avg on WL punters then i'll have to give it a -1

-1 for 3-4 yards. Does that really matter.

I really have no idea what average punt distance is in the NFL but whatever it is, the GLB universe should be the same.

So +1

Just a thought.... if teams are getting are so many opportunities to kick 60-yard punts, then their offense isn't moving the ball too well. In that case, their avg. will be higher. Often you will see bad teams with punters that have high averages due to this fact.

Although looking at the stats 12 punters with 50+ averages does seem excessive.

-1 real life punters have more incentive to kick it high or to the sideline than GLB punters. Shane Lechler could average 60 yards per punt if he wanted to.

Average punt is that short because teams punt short when they are sitting on their own 45 to midfield. Average punter in the NFL can smack them 60+ constantly, but you are also talking mostly a line-drive punt which equals more room for the PR.
Height over Distance my friend.
