Replace or modify the current Light Normal Hard setting as follows:
Give players a tactical choice of Intensity.
The Intensity setting would be a slider, which would run from -100 to plus 100.
This would have two effects.
Firstly
One plus the Intensity Setting/100 would become a multiplier of all of a player's physical attributes. Thus a setting of 100 would add 1%, a -100 would subtract 1%.
Secondly
During nightly upkeep, the setting used during the most recent regular season game will be used to alter the Decline Modifier. The applicable Intensity Setting divided by 200 would be added to the Decline Modifier (ie +0.5 if 100, -0.5 if -100 etc).
The day a player enters decline will be modified by subtracting the Decline Modifier (meaning a minus modifier is adding days a positive one subtracting), with any fraction becoming a percentage chance that the date is moved one further back or closer (ie if the Modifier is -10.5 then there is a 50% chance that the Decline Date would be moved 10 days later and a 50% chance it would be moved 11 Days later).
The Date is modified constantly up to the entry into decline until the Decline date is two days away whereupon the Intensity Modifier is no longer available and is set to Zero (the player is too old and rickety to try harder and playing at all is not "easy" or low intensity to allow him to relax at all on the field).
The idea here is to allow a player to train and play with maximum intensity at a cost of career longevity, or to hold some back to keep his knees and tendons younger a little longer.
This would also make it so that teams with big advantages could "take a game off" and teams fighting up hill in a game could "edge it up a notch" to try harder, leading to more variability in game outcomes and thus more interesting game results.
EDIT - OPTION To avoid people doing negative intensity during Pee Wee or minors to extend plateau, have a point in the career when this turns on, such as entering Plateau or perhaps day 200 or 240 etc.
EDIT 2 - changed modifier to Decline Modifier from 1/100th to 1/10th so that the Intensity modifier would have more effect.
EDIT 3 - changed it to 1/200th. Finally did math. That would make it 80x.5 or 40 days +/- to decline if you used it in every regular season game in plateau (well it could only take off less since you wouldnt have 80 games to play) Playoffs could change it a tad more as well.
