So if I have a player wearing 4 AEQ all fully upgraded and I have the 4 "normal" pieces at level 0 equipment, dont show that player as having XX amount of upgrades.....basically only show the upgrades left on the EQUIPPED items.

+1, excellent suggestion as it will have the added bonus of showing if you have forgot to equip a piece.

-1 in just that at times I might have a piece of AEQ that I'm slowly upgrading before I equip it.

Sweet god yes. The way it's set up now is completely worthless. Over half my dots have 10+ equipment upgrades "missing". One has 93 missing despite being at +58.

Easier way would be a check box to show unequiped EQ or not, potentially another checkbox to show all AEQ
