I'm with the OP on this one, although this has never happened to my team. There's no reason why GLB can't sort this out and take game-days into account when scheduling. It's just sheer laziness on their part not to. Sure, the 1 level makes very little difference, but there's no reason not to give teams as level a playing field as possible in the official tournament.
