For that matter , does it REQUIRE ANY blocking at all to fire? Or does the strength disparity between the two players in question (say a 90 str WR and a 60 str CB) + the 10 Pancake = sufficient to decide the issue?

i think it basically needs blocking, but can fire even with none,
i've seen low block scat FBs pancake b4, but not sure on the specs,
so ill make a useless comment to bump this

Considering you can pancake people without pancake and minimum blocking, then you probably don't need blocking, but... I think the higher blocking on a WR would help significantly since it will allow you to hold the block longer increasing the chance you have to pancake, if the defender breaks away before you pancake him, you'll have less pancakes.
