Does Break Thru work for a DE and, if not, what would be a better bonus SA? Thanks!

Works for a DE. Usually more useful when going against the ROT and TE/HB. Will get little to no use if you are going against the LOT.

However, it is not the prefer extra SA to have unless you are sure you're getting double-up a lot. I would say if you're RDE then forget it, go with Balance.

Balance seems like a waste on the DL as you really shouldn't be getting pancaked much, if at all.

Balance is pretty much a waste of time if you have a good build. Relentless pursuit is a good SA for either side, but especially for RDE.
