OK I decided to break down and finally do one for us. I was not exactly sure how I should do it but I came up with a fair mathematical formula. So here goes it.

1. New York Doom
2. Indianapolis Gangsters
3. Houston Outlaws
4. Miami Carniceros
5. Hollywood Stars
------------------------------------------------------------
6. Omaha Shockers
7. Cary Carpetbaggers
8. Honolulu Warriors
9. South Texas Thunder
10. Miami Sharks
11. Montepelier Morticians
12. St. Louis Beer Barons
13. El Paso Bandits
14. Ho Playbook
15. Riverside Renegades
16. Kansas City Wiz
17. Scranton Tunas
18. Albany Mammoths
19. Radio City Irrelevents
20. BC Lions
21. Charlotte Clamjousters
22. Chicago Dire Wolves
23. Oakland Terror
24. Cleveland Steamer
25. Palmyra Cougars
26. Elite Sea Team
27. Pittsburgh Irons
28. Tampa Elite
29. Houston Panthers
30. Team Chuck Norris
31. Nashville Dores
32. LA Avengers.

This is the first time I ever did this. And it was completely unbiased. If you notice I ranked the Houston Outlaws above my beloved Shockers.

Well, I worked for about an hour on this while I was working the duty desk (saved it to a Word Doc), so I'm still posting mine!!!

Someone on my team (Omaha) was asking about a league power ranking and I noticed we don’t have one this year, so I thought I’d put something together. These are based completely on numbers to take out any favoritism. The only factor not included that probably should be is SOS. I just don’t have time to go through everyone’s schedule and evaluate them, so it’ll change as the season progresses and teams play harder or easier teams. It uses rankings for pass offense, pass defense, rush offense, rush defense, points scored, points allowed, and wins. I did a very short write up on the top 10 and listed the rest with their highest and lowest ranking. The Western teams will have a little more depth in the write-up as I’m more familiar with their schedules.

1. New York Doom

New York ranks first in rushing offense, rushing defense and scoring offense, as well as tied for second in scoring defense. They have dominated their opponents thus far with their ground game and stingy defense.

2. Houston Outlaws

The Outlaws lost a close game to the Shockers, but still rank second in passing offense, scoring offense and scoring defense (tied). Their also third in passing defense, which helps them claim the #2 power ranking despite the loss.

3. Hollywood Stars

The Stars have also jumped a few undefeated teams despite a loss and the #16 ranked pass defense. Their major factor is their number one ranked pass offense, as well as high rankings in rushing defense, scoring offense, and scoring defense.

4. Indianapolis Gangsters

Despite a #30 ranking in pass defense, the Gangsters are in the top 5 with their undefeated record and #3 ranking in rushing offense, rushing defense, and scoring offense.

5. Omaha Shockers

The big surprise for the Shockers this season has been their much improved passing offense which ranks #6, as does their pass defense. But it’s their #1 scoring defense and undefeated record against some of the West’s best teams that has them in the top 5 this week.

6. Honolulu Warriors

Honolulu has had a tough start to a promising season after a loss to the Shockers and then a tie with South Texas this week. Their passing defense ranks in the bottom half of the league and their passing offense that dominated teams last season has not been as effective. But even with their 2.5 wins, they are hanging just outside the top 5 with their #2 rushing defense and scoring defense (tied).

7. Cary Carpetbaggers

Cary is another team with a loss that has done well in the rankings, mostly due to their strong running game (#4), running defense (#5), and scoring offense (#5). Their passing offense and defense have also been strong to go with the running game.

8. Miami Carniceros

Miami was all but a lock for the top 10 with the #5 rushing offense, #4 rushing defense, and #7 scoring offense to go with their undefeated record. However, they are hampered by their passing offense (#13), passing defense (#21), and scoring defense (#14).

9. South Texas Thunder

The Thunder is another surprise at number 9, a low ranking for an undefeated team after their tie with Honolulu. However, they don’t have many high rankings, their highest ranking being #7 in scoring offense but their lowest is #14 in passing defense, so while nothing really sticks out, they’re pretty consistent across the board.

10. Kansas City Wiz

Kansas City shares a common theme with South Texas to go with their 3-1 record. They don’t have any huge strength nor a glaring weakness, except that their offensive rankings (#8 pass, #10 rush, #9 scoring) are all higher than defensive rankings (#15 pass, #15 rush, #14 scoring).

11. Montpelier Morticians (#2 pass def; #24 pass off)
12. Miami Sharks (#2 rush off; #24 pass def)
13. St. Louis Beer Barons (#8 pass def; #23 pass off)
14. Scranton Tunas (#5 scoring def; #31 pass off)
15. Ho Playbook (#9 scoring def; #25 rush off)
16. Riverside Renegades (#8 scoring off; #27 pass def)
17. Albany Mammoths (#5 pass off; #21 scoring def)
18. El Paso Bandits (#12 scoring def; #29 pass def)
19. Charlotte Clamjousters (#11 pass def; #22 rush def)
20. Chicago Dire Wolves (#4 pass def; #25 rush def)
21. Oakland Terror (#4 pass off; #28 rush off)
22. BC Lions (#1 pass def; #29 pass off)
23. Palmyra Cougars (#3 pass off; #29 rush off)
24. Radio City Irrelevants (#14 rush off; #30 pass off)
25. The Elite Seas Team (#17 pass off; #27 scoring def)
26. Pittsburgh Irons (#18 rush off; #29 scoring def)
27. Cleveland Steamer (#19 pass def; #29 scoring off)
28. Tampa Elite (#23 scoring off; #27 rush def)
29. Nashville Dores (#16 pass off; #32 rush def)
30. TEAM Chuck Norris (#20 pass off; #32 scoring off)
31. Houston Panthers (#22 pass off; #31 pass def)
32. Los Angeles Avengers (#31 rush def & scoring off; #32 everything else)

I didnt inclclude SOS either being that all western conference teams will play each other and the same goes for the Eastern. It just a matter of when the teams will play. And unless some of these teams do some major rebuilding it is not gonna matter

^ it matters somewhat if a team boosted early vs boosting late, but there really is no way to track that in a SOS. Some teams might sacrifice a few early season wins to get an extra level come playoff time.

You have to remember stats don't necessitate ability so much. Just because a team ranks high if they can't get the wins then you have to question that. Thats why I'd take edwardwscollins list as a better reflection.

You only say that because I got Indy ranked higher than JD does

That's why I factor in wins & losses and also scoring offense/defense, which is actually weighted heavier than yardage. You'll notice that some teams with very high rankings in some areas still have low power ranking scores (i.e. BC Lions #1 pass defense but #22 power ranking). The only real problem with these rankings is that they don't account for teams that have played easier opponents, such as those that have played Los Angeles. Most of their rankings (including wins/losses) are going to be higher than those that have played, oh let's see, Honolulu, Houston Outlaws, and Cary (all top 10 teams). Other than that, I think they are a good assessment of how well a team is performing compared to others in the league. But for a good power ranking, I absolutely had to have wins & losses factored in as well as score differential, which is covered by scoring offense & defense.

It may not be perfect and I may change up my formula a bit, but as of right now, it's about as good as I can get it.

Also, you say you prefer Ed's list over mine, but you have no idea what it's based on. (Sorry, Ed. Please don't fire me) You can attack mine because I openly admit how I derived the numbers, but what is his based on? It could be completely opinion based for all you know. As for me, I'd prefer a ranking that is purely based on numbers than opinions.

Sorry to rant and I hope I don't come across as overly defensive. I'm just defending my position and I can tend to be overly wordy (just ask Ed about my posts on the team forum!!!)

He's a Great DC. He probably factored more into his than mine.

Mine was Total Points For/Against, Wins/Losses/Ties, Average Team Level, Team Chemistry with a weird mathematical equation to add it all up.

Of course your Indy rank came into it , apologies if I appeared as if I was knocking your list, it just seemed to me as if you based your rankings solely on the stats, as you use more so apologies for that.

Well, the Algorithms I use will require 7 games to be played before they give a full picture, but after 4, they look like this:

1 Houston Outlaws
2 Honolulu Warriors
3 Indianapolis Gangsters
4 New York Doom
5 Cary Carpetbaggers
6 Omaha Shockers
7 Hollywood Stars
8 Charlotte Clamjousters
9 St. Louis Beer Barons
10 Riverside Renegades
11 Kansas City Wiz
12 Scranton Tunas
13 South Texas Thunder
14 Montpelier Morticians
15 BC Lions
16 Miami Sharks
17 Miami Carniceros
18 Chicago Dire Wolves
19 Radio City Irrelevants
20 El Paso Bandits
21 Ho Playbook
22 Palmyra Cougars
23 The Elite Sea Team
24 Cleveland Steamer
25 Albany Mammoths
26 Tampa Elite
27 Oakland Terror
28 Pittsburgh Irons
29 Houston Panthers
30 TEAM Chuck Norris
31 Nashville Dores
32 Los Angeles Avengers

I expect that when the extra 3 weeks are accounted for some of the Eastern teams will move up a little, most probably at the top.

The other two both rank the New York Doom at the top, what's different about your algorithm?

It requires an initial value to be judged for each team, so that the strength of schedule can be taken into account. This has to be a matter of judgement. Unless I get it drastically wrong, any error should pretty much have worked its way out of the system by the seventh game.

I've a feeling that the initial values I gave for the top teams in the west may have been 5 or 6 points too high. Already the Doom and the Gangsters are closing the gap at the top. I reckon one of those teams may be number one by my system by week 7.

Of course, reallistically, as neither conference interacts with the other until week 16, this should really be two 16-team Power Rankings. But where's the fun in that?
