I am wondering if jumping is worth training up for a d-lineman....does anyone have a high jumping skill and have it show any impact on your player? I had a weak 8, and I have started training it in hopes it will help me get some diving tackles/diving sacks/Pass deflections. What is the highest you have?

* as a side note, I do know str and agi are more important...I am not advocating using any sp on jumping, unless it is proven as helpful.

lol. I am not sure this guy isn't kidding. However, jumping does help with your "diving tackle," which may be useful in sacking the QB, and/or the ball carrier.

lol, I had a similar thought. I figured maybe it helped turn hurries into sacks along with helping make diving tackles and knocking down balls at the LOS.

I was hoping that is what it would result in. I was planning to try to train mine up to 15-18 range and see if it was producing anything at all. I mean if blocking helps, and only marginally at that, why not jumping.

I've been training it this season, got it up to the 15 range. I've noticed a couple more diving tackles so far. My LB got his first sack today, but I don't think it was a result of jumping though, clean break through the line into the QB head-on.

The first thing you should do when someone gives advice is- check how their player performs at the position they are commenting on. No performance means you should probably ignore it.

Yeah, stats are not always meaningful. You could have a great D-linemen who gets double/triple teamed and get awful stats. But, as long as he does that, someone on the defense will get the stat.

You said the second thing in another post... so how do you judge performance since it's obviously not stats since they aren't always meaningful...
Besides, the only guy who has given advise in this thread so far is TheKingofVA and he had 8 sacks and lead his league in hurries. He might be screwing with us, but I think training some points in jumping could help a DEs preformance other then in sacks.
Hell its worth a shot.

I will continue to train my jumping to see if it helps, but it will probably be hard to tell since I will also be increasing my agility and vision. It would be nice if Bort could comment on if jumping helps in changing a hurry into a sack.

Threads on DE's clear this up for me. While jumping is important, it is low on the list of attributes needed. It may impact it some, but not significantly.
If you want advice on where to put points- put it in agility and strength for your D-line player. Those seem to be the primary attributes needed to succeed.
With my D-line players that is where I went wrong. I started focusing on strength and they suffered until I put more points into agility again.

I agree 100% with you, I was more looking for an "edge" so to speak...

For stats on D-linemen I look at a few key stats.

What is the % of TFL per tackle? A good one will be a high ratio of TFL.
Keep in mind, sacks are not counted in the TFL column- so include it when doing the math.
Look at the hurries the player has. Good players on the line will get some every game.

You also have to look at the position DT/NT you look at differently than DE. The DE should have more hurries and TFL. If the DE next to the DT/NT is performing well, it can be a sign of a player being significant by eating up blockers.
