Forum > Position Talk > D Line Club > Pass Rushing DE - ideal endgame build?

I am pretty much a DE novice, having only built one DE ever. With that in mind, I think my guy is pretty dang well-built. Honestly, though, I am not sure how I can confirm this since I don't honestly know what a well-built DE should look like...

So I guess I am wondering what the endgame build should ideally be for a stud pass rusher DE. Figure some people around here have to know better than I...

Any feedback is definitely appreciated (and no this is not a brag thread, thus I did not post my actual build... can post it later if desired, but bragging about it is truly not my intent).

base 90 speed/agi, 77 str, 10-10-10-10 on the pass rush tree.

Hmmm... ok

I am sitting at level 65 with Base 92 Speed, 88 Agil, 75 Str, nothing in the trees (well, except my 3rd piece of AEQ gives 5 to Tunnel Vision), but I have 42 SPs I need to apply still.

So perhaps Str to 77 cap then work on the Pass Rusher Tree?

I currently have both only at 1st cap... was thinking about 60 cap for Vision, maybe (?)

Bawahahahahahahhaha. Funniest DE suggestion I've seem in awhile.

Anyway, back to the original question, if you want "endgame build" your str must be up in the high 80s. Bort has tweaked the blocking scheme that if your DE is not at last in the low 80s in str than he'll be eating plenty of pancakes once you reach the higher levels.

Of course this is on top of the fact your agi and spd should be base 90 (and with equipments they should be in 100s), and yes, vision at 60 and cap confidence.

Oh, and if your tackling isn't at least above 55 you'll be whiffing by a lot of RBs.

Yep, tough game for DEs.

Top end game DE's are near impossible and top OT's are too easy.
This because the moving target always effected the DE's more: First Tunnel Vision or FirstStep and high speed was teh win then some season 120 agility was the way to go, now you almost need 100 strength to win a battle...

Bottom line is: if your balanced you'll get hardly anything and if you specialize you might get lucky for a season but the rest will be bad...

And I was thinking of remaking my DE (first player I made) if he kept having bad seasons, but I guess I'll look for another defensive position.

My suggestion is this: Don't be greedy. When making a pass-rushing DE, don't set out to have 50-sack seasons. The higher up in the pyramid you go, the more you'll see DCs who get sacks and hurries via scheming -- not because of an incredible DE build.

What coordinators don't want to do, I'm sure, is have to scheme to stop the run because of some lightweight on the end.

I'd say an absolute minimum 90 strength for a RDE. Will you rack up 25 sacks a season in the pros? Probably depends more on the system than your build. But if you're not a liability in the run game and you pick up 5-10 meaningful sacks over the course of the season, that's probably more valuable.
