What's the difference? Is one better than the other or is this similar to Quick Cut and Change Direction?

they're entirely different. I believe big hit is activated on every tackle, monster requires a successful roll.

Big hit does not activate on each tackle, it also requires a roll.
The difference is much the same as Lower The Shoulder and Stiff Arm.
Both increase your chance of breaking a tackle, and both are separate rolls. They both also have different chances of activating and different bonuses (and amounts of bonuses).
Monster hit seems to have more of a bonus and more of a morale hit and is less likely to fire... my interpretation from reading the description. It also could be that Big hit affects energy more while monster hit affects morale more. That last part was a guess, but what is definitely evident is that monster hit offers a bigger hit to morale.
