Best advice is recruit where you can and buy a lot of flex.

Kind of pointless for someone inexperienced with AIs to ask someone else who is inexperienced with AIs for help.

Generally true, but my rl buddy and I did all right in S12 with 0 AI experience between us at the start of the season: http://goallineblitz.com/game/team.pl?season=12&team_id=6895

Granted, it's copper, but we learned a lot and did all right last season in Silver 5 too.

On the other hand, I did a fair amount of reading and watched a few games between high-caliber teams (Gold, silver tournament teams) to see how they handled things. That, and I have a basic understanding of football.

My advice: Read guides (http://goallineblitz.com/guides.html is one place to start, Gerr's DC guide http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=3701165 is another, and the useful links at the bottom of Thunder's tl;dr post http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=2973391 is a third). Watch games between good teams (gold league). Remember these three tidbits:

1) The AI reads from top to bottom. So you put your special cases first, general cases last.
2) If you want regular I formation defenses to work, put in your SI and WI cases first, then put your "I" cases last with "I (any)".
3) Outside blitzers (safeties or corners) stop outside rushes far more effectively than a DE or LB. Particularly QB rollouts.
